HOUSE RESOLUTION
2
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3
Representatives wish to recognize the career and legacy of
4
Major Edward Vattmann of the United States Army, who
5
exemplified a life of courage, leadership, and unwavering
6
dedication to the United States of America; and
7
WHEREAS, Major Vattmann, born in 1840, served with
8
distinction as a military officer, earning the respect of his
9
peers and soldiers for his strategic brilliance, steadfast
10
duty, and commitment to upholding peace; and
11
WHEREAS, Following the death of Sitting Bull, Major
12
Vattmann played a pivotal role in helping to negotiate and
13
resolve a peace treaty between the Seventh Cavalry and the
14
Sioux, easing tensions and preventing further conflict on the
15
frontier; and
16
WHEREAS, Major Vattmann's service extended beyond the
17
battlefield, including his solemn act of giving the last rites
18
to President William McKinley following his assassination; and
19
WHEREAS, Major Vattmann contributed to domestic harmony by
20
assisting in the resolution of the Pullman Strike in Chicago,
21
promoting labor peace during a time of national unrest; and

WHEREAS, Major Vattmann further demonstrated his
2
diplomatic skill by helping to mediate and resolve a land
3
dispute between the Catholic Church and the native peoples of
4
the Philippines; and
5
WHEREAS, Major Vattmann's career and life reflects a
6
profound commitment to fostering peace, civic responsibility,
7
and the values that define the American spirit; therefore, be
8
it
9
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
10
HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11
we recognize the extraordinary career and legacy of Major
12
Edward Vattmann of the United States Army, whose service to
13
his country and community represents the highest ideals of
14
courage, faith, and patriotism; and be it further
15
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16
presented to the Lake County Courthouse as an expression of
17
our respect and esteem for Major Vattman's courage and service
18
to the United States of America.
