HOUSE RESOLUTION

2

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3
Representatives wish to congratulate the Sauganash Woman's
4
Club on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its founding
5
in 2026; and

6

WHEREAS, The Sauganash community in Chicago was carved
7
from prairie and woods after realtors Koester and Zander
8
subdivided 65 acres into a residential area in 1926, an area
9
that was a remote, country-like setting with unpaved roads and
10
portable buildings for schools and churches; and

11

WHEREAS, Henry Zander Jr. met with local women to envision
12
a social and civic cornerstone for the neighborhood, and this
13
vision came to life at the home of Luella Carsten, leading to
14
the official organization of the Sauganash Woman's Club; and

15

WHEREAS, The Sauganash Woman's Club's first formal meeting
16
consisted of 27 pioneering women at the home of C. M. Fries,
17
where Owen O'Malley was elected as the first president,
18
establishing the very first women's organization in the
19
neighborhood; and

20

WHEREAS, The Sauganash Woman's Club's official crest,
21
designed by Nancy Mix, beautifully honors the community's

heritage by incorporating a carnation, which is the club
2
flower, alongside a feather and arrow to symbolize Chief
3
Sauganash, for whom the community is named; and

4

WHEREAS, For 100 years, the Sauganash Woman's Club has
5
remained a membership-based nonprofit that bridges
6
generations, embodying the core attributes of loyalty and
7
cooperation while fostering lifelong friendships among women
8
in Sauganash and surrounding areas; and

9

WHEREAS, The Sauganash Woman's Club's impact is felt
10
through its robust philanthropic efforts and cherished
11
community traditions, including the annual Easter egg hunt at
12
Sauganash Park, featuring over 5,000 eggs, and support for
13
local Halloween festivities and various charities; and

14

WHEREAS, The Sauganash Woman's Club continues to evolve as
15
a modern, dynamic organization, offering diverse programming
16
from theater outings and brewery socials to garden parties,
17
pickleball, and its traditional monthly meetings at the
18
Sauganash Park Fieldhouse; and

19

WHEREAS, The Sauganash Woman's Club remains a vital thread
20
in the fabric of Chicago's North Side, proving that while a
21
century has passed since its founding, its mission of
22
strengthening the community through fellowship is more
