HOUSE RESOLUTION
2
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3
Representatives wish to commend Nannette Butler for devoting
4
her life to advancing social justice, community service, and
5
civic engagement; and
6
WHEREAS, Nannette Butler, a resident of Chicago's Uptown
7
neighborhood in the 46th Ward, has been a dedicated leader at
8
the Wilson Yard Senior Building, where she consistently
9
volunteers to support fellow residents, organizes
10
community-building activities, and coordinates events such as
11
holiday gatherings to foster connection and mutual support
12
among residents; and
13
WHEREAS, Nannette Butler's commitment to service is rooted
14
in her lifelong dedication to civil rights, having been raised
15
in a family deeply engaged in the Civil Rights Movement; and
16
WHEREAS, As a young girl, Nannette Butler participated in
17
efforts supporting the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955 to 1956,
18
organized through the Congregational Church of Park Manor in
19
Chicago, by helping to prepare and send sturdy shoes from
20
Chicago to Montgomery, Alabama, enabling African American
21
women to walk long distances to work while boycotting
22
segregated bus systems; and

WHEREAS, Nannette Butler contributed to Operation
2
Breadbasket, an initiative led by the Reverend Jesse Jackson
3
Sr., which focused on economic justice by advocating for
4
employment opportunities, fair hiring practices, and
5
investment in African American communities; and
6
WHEREAS, Nannette Butler also supported Project 75, an
7
initiative aimed at increasing the number of African American
8
students admitted to medical schools, helping to expand
9
opportunities and representation in the medical profession;
10
and
11
WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Nannette Butler has remained
12
actively involved in faith-based and community-driven social
13
justice initiatives, including numerous programs at the
14
Congregational Church of Park Manor; and
15
WHEREAS, Nannette Butler has volunteered with ONE
16
Northside, contributing to grassroots organizing efforts
17
focused on equity, housing, and community empowerment in
18
Chicago; and
19
WHEREAS, Nannette Butler has served as both a staff member
20
and volunteer at Cornerstone Community Outreach, an
21
Uptown-based organization dedicated to assisting individuals

and families experiencing homelessness as they work to rebuild
2
stable and independent lives; and
3
WHEREAS, Nannette Butler's service has extended to
4
volunteering with the Child Day Center in Steger and Just
5
Harvest in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood, both of which
6
are organizations that work to address hunger, poverty, and
7
access to essential services; and
8
WHEREAS, Nannette Butler has remained a consistent and
9
active presence at community events throughout Uptown and the
10
46th Ward, where she donates her time to promote civic
11
participation, including helping residents register to vote
12
and engage in the democratic process; and
13
WHEREAS, Through decades of service, Nannette Butler has
14
made a lasting impact on her community by strengthening
15
institutions and by supporting vulnerable populations;
16
therefore, be it
17
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
18
HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19
we commend Nannette Butler for her lifelong commitment to
20
service, civil rights, and community leadership and for the
21
profound and positive impact she has made in Chicago and
22
beyond; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2
presented to Nannette Butler as an expression of our esteem
3
and respect.
