HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3
Representatives wish to commend The Selfhelp Home for its
4
contributions and service to the people of the State of
5
Illinois for the past 88 years; and

6

WHEREAS, The Selfhelp Home stands as a living, breathing
7
testament to the human spirit and embodies the character,
8
determination, and fortitude of the founding men and women who
9
organized a volunteer network to care for refugees fleeing
10
Nazism and, later, the rare survivors; and

11

WHEREAS, The Selfhelp Home was established as a response
12
to humanitarian crisis in 1938, providing sanctuary and
13
support for those who had lost everything and sought to
14
rebuild their lives in a new country; and

15

WHEREAS, For over six decades, The Selfhelp Home has
16
served as a pillar of Chicago's Uptown community, enriching
17
the neighborhood's cultural tapestry and demonstrating the
18
profound value of immigrant contributions to the city; and

19

WHEREAS, The Selfhelp Home continues its founding mission
20
by keeping its doors open to support immigrants seeking to
21
work, live, and create fulfilling lives in a new country,

honoring its heritage while meeting present-day needs; and

WHEREAS, The Selfhelp Home, founded on the principles of
3
compassion, dignity, and respect, thrives as a community where
4
older adults experience the highest quality of life possible;
5
and

WHEREAS, The dedicated staff and volunteers of The
7
Selfhelp Home exemplify Chicago's values of inclusion,
8
diversity, and care for our elders, creating a warm
9
environment where residents can live with independence and
10
pride; and

11

WHEREAS, The Selfhelp Home's commitment to preserving the
12
Jewish cultural heritage of its residents while fostering
13
intergenerational and intercultural connections strengthens
14
Chicago's social fabric and serves as a model for
15
compassionate elder care; and

16

WHEREAS, The Selfhelp Home, through the vital services it
17
provides, reminds us all of our responsibility to honor our
18
elders and ensure they continue to live with dignity, purpose,
19
and joy; and

20

WHEREAS, On Sunday, April 26, 2026, The Selfhelp Home will
21
host a gala, "A Story Celebrated", to honor its history and

raise funds to support a permanent exhibit that preserves the
2
story of the senior living community and the Jewish families
3
fleeing antisemitism that founded it; through photographs,
4
artifacts, a pictorial timeline, and the voices of those who
5
lived it, the exhibit will demonstrate that this history
6
belongs to all of us; therefore, be it

7

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8
HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9
we commend The Selfhelp Home for its 88 years of contributions
10
and service to the people of the State of Illinois; and be it
11
further

12

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13
presented to The Selfhelp Home as a symbol of our esteem and
14
respect.
