HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Guru Nanak Day is an observance dedicated to
3
honoring the life and teachings of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the
4
founder of Sikhism, whose message of one universal Creator,
5
equality of all humanity, and selfless service continues to
6
inspire millions around the world; and

7

WHEREAS, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, born in 1469, traveled
8
extensively across South Asia and the Middle East on his
9
spiritual journeys, known as Udasis, during which he spread a
10
universal message of love, compassion, and interfaith harmony;
11
and

12

WHEREAS, The foundational teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji
13
include Naam Japna, or remembrance of the Divine, Kirat Karni,
14
or honest livelihood, and Vand Chakna, or sharing with others,
15
along with the institution of Langar, a free community kitchen
16
where people of every background sit and eat together as
17
equals; together, these elements of Sikhism provide timeless
18
guidance for living a life of equality, dignity, and service;
19
and

20

WHEREAS, The observance of Guru Nanak Day was initiated by
21
the Illinois Interfaith Organization, reflecting community
22
support for its message of unity, equality, and service to

humanity; and

WHEREAS, The Illinois Interfaith Organization successfully
3
held its inaugural Guru Simran on April 26, 2026, and the
4
organization has committed to continuing this Guru Simran on
5
the last Sunday of every month as an ongoing tribute to the
6
universal teachings of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji; and

7

WHEREAS, Illinois Interfaith Organization Chairman Nauman
8
Khan Azeemi has diligently promoted and educated communities
9
about the significance of Guru Nanak Day, leading the
10
inaugural Guru Simran and continuing to advance its message
11
through interfaith initiatives; therefore, be it

12

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
13
HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14
we declare November 29, 2026 as Guru Nanak Day in the State of
15
Illinois, its inaugural observance, and we encourage all
16
residents to honor the life and teachings of Sri Guru Nanak Dev
17
Ji, the founder of Sikhism, and to participate in observances
18
that strengthen the bonds of friendship and understanding
19
among all people; and be it further

20

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21
delivered to the Illinois Interfaith Organization as a symbol
22
of our respect and esteem.
