HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3
Representatives wish to commend Centro San Bonifacio for
4
offering 35 years of remarkable service, leadership, and
5
unwavering commitment to the immigrant community in the City
6
of Chicago; and

7

WHEREAS, Centro San Bonifacio was founded by local
8
families as an act of community solidarity in 1991, following
9
the closure of the Church of San Bonifacio, with the intention
10
of being led by and for the Latin American immigrant
11
community, ensuring those in frontline positions hold
12
positions of power; and

13

WHEREAS, Centro San Bonifacio has grown from its humble
14
beginnings in a board member's apartment into a
15
self-sustaining pillar of the Northwest side of Chicago,
16
currently operating out of its vibrant home at 2959 North
17
Pulaski Road; and

18

WHEREAS, Centro San Bonifacio's community-run model is
19
anchored by Café Fenix and managed by Cooperativa Fenix, which
20
serves as a gateway to the organization and provides barista
21
training for young adults, embodying the spirit of rising from
22
the ashes following Centro San Bonifacio's reconstitution in

2012; and

WHEREAS, For more than three decades, Centro San
3
Bonifacio's community health workers, known as Promotores de
4
Salud, have served as a beacon of hope, utilizing a
5
peer-to-peer model to provide vital health education, social
6
service connections, and emotional support to families
7
navigating new beginnings; and

8

WHEREAS, The Together We Shine program, also known as
9
"Juntos Brillamos", promotes the psychosocial health of the
10
entire family through a broad palette of offerings, including
11
youth development, violence prevention, social-emotional
12
learning, and an arts academy that celebrates Latin American
13
heritage; and

14

WHEREAS, Centro San Bonifacio has remained at the
15
forefront of social justice through its Illinois Welcoming
16
Center and Southern Border Arrivals Assistance Team, providing
17
critical case management, supplies, and Know Your Rights
18
presentations to Chicago's newest neighbors; and

19

WHEREAS, Centro San Bonifacio's 35-year milestone is a
20
testament to the vision, resilience, and trust that the
21
organization has earned by transforming countless lives and
22
strengthening the very fabric of the community; therefore, be

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
3
HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
4
we commend Centro San Bonifacio on 35 years of offering
5
extraordinary service to the immigrant community of Chicago;
6
and be it further

7

RESOLVED, That we honor the passion of Centro San
8
Bonifacio's leadership, staff, and volunteers, and we wish
9
them continued growth and inspiration in the years ahead; and
10
be it further

11

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12
presented to Centro San Bonifacio as a symbol of our esteem and
13
respect.
