HOUSE RESOLUTION
2
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3
Representatives are saddened to mark the death of Murod Kurdi
4
of Oak Lawn, who passed away on June 5, 2023, at the age of 28;
5
and
6
WHEREAS, Murod Kurdi was a beloved son, brother, and
7
member of the Oak Lawn community; and
8
WHEREAS, Murod Kurdi was a lifelong student of the Oak
9
Lawn public school system where his mother worked and
10
volunteered, contributing to the well-being of thousands of
11
students; and
12
WHEREAS, Murod Kurdi was a Palestinian American, belonging
13
to the largest diaspora of Palestinians in the United States,
14
which is here in the State of Illinois; and
15
WHEREAS, Murod Kurdi lost his life tragically in an
16
alcohol-involved traffic accident when he was struck by a
17
vehicle while standing outside his home near 91st Street and
18
Tulley Avenue in Oak Lawn; and
19
WHEREAS, According to the Illinois Department of
20
Transportation's 2024 Illinois Crash Facts & Statistics

report, there were 1,085 fatal crashes statewide in 2024, and
2
20.4% involved alcohol; and
3
WHEREAS, Murod Kurdi was deeply loved by his family and
4
community, whose grief was met with an outpouring of support
5
from neighbors, activists, and fellow residents who rallied in
6
his honor to call for justice; and
7
WHEREAS, Murod Kurdi's passing has left an irreplaceable
8
void in the lives of all who knew and loved him; and
9
WHEREAS, Murod Kurdi is survived by his mother, Fadia
10
Muhamad, his brother, Suphi Kurdi, and other cherished family
11
members; therefore, be it
12
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
13
HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14
we mourn the passing of Murod Kurdi and extend our sincere
15
condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
16
him; and be it further
17
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18
presented to the family of Murod Kurdi as an expression of our
19
deepest sympathy.
