HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3
Representatives are pleased to commend Norm Meier for his
4
lifetime of service to his country, his students, and the
5
Newark community; and

6

WHEREAS, Mr. Meier was drafted into the United States Army
7
on May 24, 1967 and honorably served his nation during the
8
Vietnam War until his discharge on May 23, 1969; and

9

WHEREAS, While serving in the military, Mr. Meier fought
10
during the Tet Offensive, the Battle of Loc Ninh, and the
11
September 14, 1968 battle at Hill 222; and

12

WHEREAS, Mr. Meier served alongside fellow soldier Terry
13
Richardson, who was posthumously awarded the Congressional
14
Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism during the Battle of
15
Hill 222; and

16

WHEREAS, Mr. Meier was recognized by President Donald J.
17
Trump during the Congressional Medal of Honor ceremony for
18
Terry Richardson on March 2, 2026, bringing national attention
19
to Mr. Meier's courage and service; and

20

WHEREAS, Mr. Meier's military decorations include the

Purple Heart, two Bronze Star Medals, two Army Commendation
2
Medals, two Unit Commendations, and the Air Medal; and

3

WHEREAS, Following his military service, Mr. Meier
4
dedicated 31 years to Newark Community High School, where he
5
taught Industrial Arts, later known as Industrial Technology,
6
and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD); and

7

WHEREAS, Mr. Meier also devoted 25 years to coaching young
8
athletes, including 17 years coaching baseball and eight years
9
coaching softball; and

10

WHEREAS, Mr. Meier was inducted into the Newark Community
11
High School Hall of Fame in 2008 and was further recognized by
12
the Illinois Coaches Association as the 2008 Class 1A Softball
13
Coach of the Year; and

14

WHEREAS, Mr. Meier and his wife, Barb, have been married
15
for 53 years; they are the proud parents of Todd, Jill, and Amy
16
and have nine grandchildren; therefore, be it

17

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
18
HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19
we commend and thank Norm Meier for his courageous military
20
service, his decades of dedication to education and coaching,
21
and his lasting impact on the Newark community; and be it
