HOUSE RESOLUTION
2
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3
Representatives were saddened to learn of the passing of
4
Spencer Leak Jr., a distinguished businessman, civic leader,
5
mentor, and third-generation steward of one of Illinois' most
6
respected family-owned institutions; and
7
WHEREAS, Spencer Leak served as vice president of Leak &
8
Sons Funeral Homes, a historic Black-owned enterprise that has
9
served generations of families throughout Chicago, Cook
10
County, and the State of Illinois with dignity, compassion,
11
professionalism, and care; and
12
WHEREAS, Spencer Leak followed in the footsteps of his
13
grandfather, Andrew Leak, and his father, Spencer Leak Sr.,
14
and devoted his life to preserving and strengthening a family
15
legacy that became an enduring pillar of the African American
16
community and a trusted institution for countless Illinois
17
families; and
18
WHEREAS, Spencer Leak graduated from Southern Illinois
19
University Carbondale with a Bachelor of Science in Mortuary
20
Science and Funeral Service and became a licensed funeral
21
director in 1989, dedicating more than three decades to
22
serving families during some of life's most difficult moments;

and

WHEREAS, Spencer Leak, through his leadership, expanded
3
Leak & Sons Funeral Homes operational excellence and continued
4
its tradition of service, helping thousands of families each
5
year navigate grief with dignity and respect; and
6
WHEREAS, Spencer Leak was known for his generosity of
7
spirit and commitment to community service beyond his
8
professional accomplishments; he mentored young African
9
American men through 100 Black Men, served on the boards of
10
Operation PUSH and the Better Boys Foundation, and devoted
11
himself to strengthening opportunities for future generations;
12
and
13
WHEREAS, Spencer Leak was an active member of Kappa Alpha
14
Psi Fraternity, Inc., Liberty Baptist Church, and the Illinois
15
Funeral Directors Association, embodying a life rooted in
16
faith, fellowship, and service; and
17
WHEREAS, Spencer Leak's leadership and contributions were
18
recognized throughout his lifetime, including being named in
19
Who's Who of Black Chicago and receiving the Men of Excellence
20
Award from the Chicago Defender; and
21
WHEREAS, Spencer Leak honorably carried the responsibility

of the family name, which for generations of Chicagoans
2
represented more than a business; it represented trust,
3
stability, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to serving
4
the community with grace and distinction; and
5
WHEREAS, Spencer Leak leaves behind a legacy of service
6
and devotion, as well as his beloved wife, Dr. Donna Leak; his
7
children, Spencer Leak III and Emma Sophia Leak; and numerous
8
family members, friends, colleagues, mentees, and community
9
members whose lives were enriched by his presence; therefore,
10
be it
11
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12
HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13
we mourn the passing of Spencer Leak Jr. and extend our sincere
14
condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
15
him; and be it further
16
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17
presented to the family of Spencer Leak as a symbol of our
18
deepest sympathy.
