SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3
congratulate the Greater Auburn-Gresham Development
4
Corporation (GAGDC) on the occasion of its 20th anniversary of
5
hosting the 79th Street Renaissance Festival; and

6

WHEREAS, GAGDC was founded to foster and promote the
7
revitalization of the Greater Auburn-Gresham community by
8
mobilizing resources to improve the quality of life for
9
residents and stakeholders; and

10

WHEREAS, GAGDC advances this mission through its pillars
11
of economic development, housing, education, health and
12
wellness, and community engagement, all of which are reflected
13
in the values and impact of the festival; and

14

WHEREAS, Since its inception, the 79th Street Renaissance
15
Festival has become the longest-running, Black family-friendly
16
festival on the South Side of Chicago, drawing nearly 20,000
17
attendees annually; and

18

WHEREAS, For over two decades, the 79th Street Renaissance
19
Festival has welcomed thousands of local businesses and
20
vendors, generating an economic impact of more than five
21
million dollars and creating opportunities for growth,

entrepreneurship, and community investment; and

WHEREAS, The 79th Street Renaissance Festival has built a
3
remarkable reputation for safety and unity, maintaining zero
4
acts of violence in its 20-year history and offering families
5
a joyful and secure event to close out the summer season; and

6

WHEREAS, The 79th Street Renaissance Festival has hosted a
7
number of world-class entertainers, including Anthony
8
Hamilton, Adina Howard, Raheem Devaughn, CeCe Peniston, Alicia
9
Myers, Chub Rock, Christopher Williams, Tamela Mann, Jonathan
10
McReynolds, and Kierra Sheard, and this year the festival will
11
be welcoming Chicago's own international superstar, Chaka
12
Khan, to headline the 20th anniversary celebration; and

13

WHEREAS, The 79th Street Renaissance Festival is also
14
deeply committed to service, providing meals annually to more
15
than 500 seniors at the Seniors Corner and donating backpacks
16
and food to over 500 children at the Kids Corner; and

17

WHEREAS, The 79th Street Renaissance Festival's iconic
18
60-foot Ferris wheel, the only one on Chicago's South Side and
19
a featured symbol in the festival's trademarked logo, has
20
become a source of joy, pride, and tradition for generations
21
of festivalgoers; and

WHEREAS, The 79th Street Renaissance Festival stands as a
2
living expression of GAGDC's mission and pillars, serving as a
3
symbol of Auburn-Gresham's cultural pride, economic vitality,
4
and community resilience, enriching the lives of residents and
5
visitors while showcasing the best of Chicago's South Side;
6
and

WHEREAS, The 20th Annual 79th Street Renaissance Festival
8
will be held on September 6, 2025; therefore, be it

9

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
10
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the
11
Greater Auburn-Gresham Development Corporation (GAGDC) on
12
achieving its 20th anniversary of hosting the 79th Street
13
Renaissance Festival, and we thank GAGDC for its enduring
14
contributions to community, culture, safety, and celebration.
