SENATE RESOLUTION
2
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3
congratulate Citizens for Conservation (CFC) on the occasion
4
of its 55th anniversary; and
5
WHEREAS, CFC, founded in Barrington in 1971, is a
6
volunteer-powered nonprofit dedicated to the motto, "Saving
7
Living Space for Living Things"; for over a half century, the
8
nonprofit has transformed the Barrington area into a beacon of
9
community-driven conservation through protecting vital open
10
space, restoring native ecosystems, and inspiring people of
11
all ages to care for the land; and
12
WHEREAS, From its earliest days as a small grassroots
13
group, CFC has embraced a bold vision that ordinary community
14
members, working together, could revive nearly vanished
15
prairies, savannas, wetlands, and woodlands in the region; in
16
the mid-1980s, when restoration ecology was still emerging,
17
the organization began pioneering ambitious restoration
18
techniques, setting new standards for ecological integrity; by
19
seeking rare remnant seed sources and cultivating
20
local-ecotype diversity, the nonprofit created extraordinary
21
restorations, including Grigsby Prairie and Flint Creek
22
Savanna, that today stand among the most ecologically rich and
23
admired in the region; and

1
WHEREAS, CFC has helped spark collaborative restoration
2
across Cook, Lake, and McHenry counties as a founding member
3
of the multi-county Barrington Greenways Initiative; for
4
decades, the organization has generously shared hundreds of
5
thousands of dollars' worth of native seed that is collected
6
from its preserves with partner groups, enabling dramatic
7
habitat improvements, such as restoring large portions of the
8
Spring Creek Forest Preserve, that now in turn supports the
9
nonprofit's expanding preserve system and includes the
10
232-acre Hill 'N Dale Preserve; and
11
WHEREAS, Over its 55-year history, CFC has more than
12
doubled the land it has protected, stewarding 732 acres of
13
prairie, wetland, and woodland habitats, collected nearly
14
10,000 pounds of native seed over years, representing an
15
astonishing $2.5 million in ecological value, reintroduced
16
more than 300 native plant species, which have in turn helped
17
restore local landscapes both on CFC sites and county forest
18
preserves, placed over 500,000 natives plants into community
19
hands, and continued to inspire future conservation leaders
20
through offering public bird walks, ongoing education
21
programs, and a summer internship program; and
22
WHEREAS, CFC's impact has been made possible by the
23
organization's unwavering belief in the power of people; its

1
volunteer-led model allows for meticulous, long-term
2
stewardship that follows nature's pace rather than short-term
3
funding cycles; week after week, the nonprofit's volunteers,
4
staff, and partners work side by side, restoring land,
5
learning together, and cultivating the next generation of
6
conservationists; and
7
WHEREAS, Today, CFC stands as a model, showing that a
8
dedicated community can achieve vibrant native habitats,
9
flourishing biodiversity, and land renewed through shared
10
purpose and perseverance; through land protection, ecological
11
restoration, and education, the organization continues to
12
build a healthier, more resilient landscape, ensuring that
13
living space for living things endures for generations to
14
come; therefore, be it
15
RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
16
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate
17
Citizens for Conservation (CFC) on achieving its 55th
18
anniversary, and we wish the nonprofit continued success in
19
its endeavors; and be it further
20
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21
presented to CFC as an expression of our esteem and respect.
