SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Muscular dystrophy is a group of genetic diseases
3
that cause progressive muscle weakness and degeneration of
4
skeletal muscles; and

5

WHEREAS, There are more than 30 distinct forms of muscular
6
dystrophy, which vary in age of onset, severity, and
7
progression and affect individuals across the lifespan; and

8

WHEREAS, All forms of muscular dystrophy are progressive
9
and may lead to significant mobility limitations, loss of
10
independence, and impacts on quality of life for individuals
11
and families; and

12

WHEREAS, A comprehensive awareness month would ensure that
13
individuals living with less common forms of muscular
14
dystrophy are represented; and

15

WHEREAS, September is recognized nationally and globally
16
as Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month by leading health and
17
advocacy organizations; therefore, be it

18

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
19
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare September
20
2026 as Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month in the State of

Illinois to raise awareness of all forms of muscular dystrophy
2
and to encourage education, public understanding, and
3
continued research related to the many subtypes of muscular
4
dystrophy.
