SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Our nation's longstanding and ongoing audacious
3
experiment in self-governance requires a populace with an
4
understanding of the nation's laws and government, the skills
5
for discussion and working together across differences, and a
6
widespread commitment to the civic strength of our
7
communities; and

8

WHEREAS, Civic education is vital to sustaining and
9
strengthening constitutional democracy in the United States of
10
America; and

11

WHEREAS, The practice of democracy must be taught and
12
learned anew by each generation; and

13

WHEREAS, Educators are often engaged in thankless yet
14
essential daily work to support young people in their
15
development of an informed and empowered civic identity that
16
is core to sustaining and strengthening our nation's
17
constitutional democracy; and

18

WHEREAS, The Illinois General Assembly has strengthened
19
K-12 civic education in the State over the past decade by
20
requiring civics courses in middle school and high school, and
21
the Illinois Civics Hub has grown the Illinois Democracy

Schools Network to more than 90 public and private schools and
2
districts statewide, each of them deeply committed to
3
students' civic development and to supporting teachers,
4
schools, and districts throughout Illinois with civics course
5
and standards implementation; and

6

WHEREAS, The 250th anniversary of the Declaration of
7
Independence occurring during this current year calls on our
8
collective ability and commitment to work across our
9
differences and reinvest ourselves in making civic learning
10
for all students a community, state, and national priority;
11
therefore, be it

12

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
13
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare March 9
14
through March 15, 2026 as Civic Learning Week in the State of
15
Illinois; and be it further

16

RESOLVED, That we extend our deepest appreciation to the
17
students, volunteers, and professionals who prioritize the
18
enterprise of civic learning within our communities.
