SENATE RESOLUTION
2
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3
to learn of the death of William S. Hanley of Brooklin, Maine,
4
who passed away on December 8, 2025; and
5
WHEREAS, William Hanley, the son of William M. and Dorothy
6
Hanley, was born in Chicago on June 4, 1939; he graduated from
7
St. Benedict Parish School in 1957; he received his Bachelor
8
of Arts in Political Science from the University of Notre Dame
9
in 1961 and earned his Juris Doctor at the University of
10
Chicago School of Law in 1964; he married Nancy J. Fahrnkopf at
11
Notre Dame's Basilica of the Sacred Heart in 1970; and
12
WHEREAS, William Hanley began his legal career at the
13
Chicago law firm Kahn, Adsit, and Arnstein; he moved to
14
Springfield and served as legislative counsel to Illinois
15
Governor Richard B. Ogilvie from 1969 to 1972; he was an
16
attorney with the law firm of Sorling, Northrup, Hanna,
17
Cullen, and Cochran from 1972 to 2000; he was a Ford Foundation
18
fellow and held a variety of other professional roles,
19
including general counsel to the Illinois Community College
20
Board and chairman of the Secretary of State's Advisory
21
Council on Public Records and Privacy; and
22
WHEREAS, William Hanley moved to Maine in 1994, where he

opened the William S. Hanley Law Office in Blue Hill; he served
2
as town counsel for Brooklin, Maine and chairman of the
3
Brooklin Planning Board; he was also a member of the
4
humanitarian organization Independent Order of Odd Fellows;
5
and
6
WHEREAS, William Hanley and his wife, Nancy, raised their
7
sons William and Michael in Springfield in the 1970s and
8
1980s, years fondly remembered for good times, fantastic
9
neighbors, and adventures on the lake; he was a friend to many
10
in Brooklin, Maine, a community dear to his heart, where he
11
enjoyed early morning coffee at the general store and daily
12
post office conversations; and
13
WHEREAS, William Hanley is survived by his wife of 55
14
years, Nancy J. Hanley; his sons, Michael J. Hanley and
15
William M. Hanley; his granddaughters, Aleksandra Hanley and
16
Matilda Hanley; and his grandson, Cameron Hanley; therefore,
17
be it
18
RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
19
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
20
William S. Hanley and extend our sincere condolences to his
21
family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
22
further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2
presented to the family of William Hanley as an expression of
3
our deepest sympathy.
