SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, On an average day, more than 700 injury crashes
3
involve distracted driving, and the economic toll of all motor
4
vehicle crashes in the United States annually exceeds $400
5
billion; and

6

WHEREAS, Talking on a mobile phone, even in hands-free
7
mode, texting, and programming your dashboard infotainment
8
system or GPS device can divert your attention away from
9
driving and result in physical or cognitive distraction; and

10

WHEREAS, Illinois residents and all Americans deserve to
11
live in communities that promote safe driving behaviors and
12
healthy lifestyles; and

13

WHEREAS, Preventing distracted driving injuries and deaths
14
requires the cooperation of all levels of government,
15
employers, and the general public; and

16

WHEREAS, The National Safety Council and the State of
17
Illinois work to promote policies, practices, and procedures
18
leading to increased safety, protection, and health in
19
business and industry, in schools and colleges, on roads and
20
highways, and in homes and communities; and

WHEREAS, In April 2026, the National Safety Council will
2
provide the nation with a month-long distracted driving public
3
education campaign; and

4

WHEREAS, Spring is a time when people begin to log more
5
miles on the road, and it is imperative to focus attention on
6
motor vehicle injury risks and preventions; therefore, be it

7

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
8
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare April 2026
9
as Distracted Driving Awareness Month in the State of
10
Illinois; and be it further

11

RESOLVED, That we urge the citizens and businesses of the
12
State of Illinois to observe Distracted Driving Awareness
13
Month by practicing safe driving behaviors and pledging to
14
drive distraction-free.
