SENATE RESOLUTION
2
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3
to learn of the death of Ned P. Broemmel of Quincy, who passed
4
away on January 22, 2026; and
5
WHEREAS, Ned Broemmel was born to Paul Bernard Broemmel
6
and Ethel (Stork) Broemmel in Quincy on August 14, 1939; he
7
attended Madison School, graduated from Quincy High School in
8
1957, and was a 1961 graduate of Culver-Stockton College,
9
where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity; after
10
serving in the United States Army and the Illinois National
11
Guard, where he attained the rank of sergeant, he received his
12
teaching certificate from Quincy College; he married D. Reaugh
13
Swallow on June 10, 1966; and
14
WHEREAS, Ned Broemmel taught math and business at Quincy
15
Junior High; when Reaugh's father became ill, Ned took
16
responsibility for the insurance business and spent nearly 40
17
years with Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company; he earned
18
multiple sales awards and developed relationships with
19
numerous local businesses and their employees; for 18 years,
20
he co-owned Quincy's Maid Rite East restaurant with members of
21
the Geise family; he enjoyed working with teenagers in their
22
first jobs and creating new recipes to expand the menu; and

WHEREAS, Ned Broemmel was very involved in the community;
2
he belonged to First Union Congregational Church and served on
3
the board for many years; he was also a member of local
4
organizations such as the Quincy Preservation Commission and
5
the Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County; he held a
6
variety of leadership roles, including his time as president
7
of the Noon Rotary Club and president of the Quincy Art Club;
8
he received the City of Quincy Arts Award for Volunteer
9
Leadership in 1990; he and Reaugh were the first volunteer
10
chairpersons of the Quincy Public Schools Foundation's annual
11
fundraising campaign in 2018; and
12
WHEREAS, Ned Broemmel raised two daughters, Melissa and
13
Katherine, with his wife; he was a hands-on homeowner who
14
spent much of his free time working in the yard or renovating
15
the family home, and he and Reaugh passed on their love of
16
landscaping and home improvement to their daughters; the
17
entire family loved to travel, taking many trips to national
18
parks, historic sites, and museums; he was a member of the
19
Quincy Country Club, where he enjoyed dances, dining, and
20
parties with friends; he was also a Chicago Cubs fan and loved
21
to watch the team play at Wrigley Field; and
22
WHEREAS, Ned Broemmel was preceded in death by his
23
parents; his parents-in-law, Walter C. and Dorothy (Liggett)
24
Swallow Jr.; a brother-in-law, Walter C. Swallow III; his

daughter, Katherine R. Broemmel; and his aunts and uncles; and
2
WHEREAS, Ned Broemmel is survived by his wife; his
3
daughter, Melissa (David) Schaefer and David's daughter,
4
Katie; his cousins, William R. (Linda) Waterkotte, Roseann
5
(Jim) Terwelp, Barbara (Terry) Niewohner, Mary Lou (Terry)
6
Tucker, Carol (Tom) Sparrow, and Ruth Terlisner; additionally,
7
Suzanne (Alan Buzzard) and Robert (Jane Flick) Heidbreder;
8
therefore, be it
9
RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
10
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
11
Ned P. Broemmel and extend our sincere condolences to his
12
family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
13
further
14
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15
presented to the family of Ned Broemmel as an expression of our
16
deepest sympathy.
