SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3
congratulate Eric M. Dean on the occasion of his retirement as
4
president of the International Association of Bridge,
5
Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers; and

6

WHEREAS, Eric Dean, born and raised in Chicago, began his
7
career as an ironworker after joining the apprenticeship
8
program as a fourth-generation member of Local Union No. 63 in
9
December 1980, completing his apprenticeship in 1984; he
10
worked as a journeyman, foreman, and apprentice instructor
11
before becoming a local union officer in 1989, and he
12
ultimately held various offices within Local Union No. 63; and

13

WHEREAS, Eric Dean was appointed general organizer of the
14
International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental
15
and Reinforcing Iron Workers in 1999, working in the
16
Department of Ornamental, Architectural and Miscellaneous
17
Metals; he became president of the Chicago and Vicinity
18
District Council of Iron Workers in 2005; he was appointed 9th
19
general vice president in 2008; he was elected as general
20
secretary of the International Association of Bridge,
21
Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers by
22
delegates to the union's 42nd International Convention in
23
2011; during his tenure, he graduated from the Harvard Labor

Trade Program in 2013; and

WHEREAS, Eric Dean was unanimously elected general
3
president by the General Executive Council of the
4
International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental
5
and Reinforcing Iron Workers on April 22, 2015, which became
6
effective on July 1, 2015; he was then elected as general
7
president for a five-year term by the delegates to the 43rd
8
International Convention in August 2016; and

9

WHEREAS, Eric Dean further served the union through his
10
work as secretary of the National Coordinating Committee for
11
Multiemployer Plans (NCCMP), a position he was elected to in
12
2015, and as a member on the Governing Board of Presidents of
13
North America's Building Trades Unions (NABTU) and the
14
Executive Council of the American Federation of Labor and
15
Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), representing
16
130,000 union ironworkers; and

17

WHEREAS, Eric Dean provided more than four decades of
18
dedicated service to the International Association of Bridge,
19
Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers, during
20
which his unwavering leadership strengthened the union,
21
expanded opportunities for working families, and raised the
22
bar for safety and solidarity across North America before
23
concluding his tenure on December 31, 2025; and

WHEREAS, Eric Dean is the husband of Judy, and they are the
2
proud parents of three and grandparents of six; therefore, be
3
it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
5
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Eric
6
M. Dean on his retirement as president of the International
7
Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing
8
Iron Workers, thank him for his continued service and
9
dedication to the union and its members, and wish him all the
10
best in his future endeavors; and be it further

11

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12
presented to Eric Dean as an expression of our esteem and
13
respect.
