SENATE RESOLUTION
2
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3
to learn of the death of Kelly Albert Grant Jr. of Springfield,
4
who passed away on February 5, 2026; and
5
WHEREAS, Kelly Grant, the son of Kelly A. Grant Sr. and
6
Gracie (Clark) Grant, was born in Springfield on May 29, 1929;
7
he graduated from Springfield High School as valedictorian,
8
and he later earned his bachelor's degree in business from
9
Northwestern University in 1953 while serving in the United
10
States Marine Corps; he married Karen McQuinn; and
11
WHEREAS, Kelly Grant owned and operated Mel-O-Cream Donuts
12
for more than six and a half decades; he became president of
13
the Springfield-based business in 1953, taking it over from
14
his father, who established the company in 1932; during his
15
tenure, he oversaw wholesale outreach, which included donuts
16
being supplied to supermarket chains and convenience stores,
17
the expansion of product offerings, such as frozen dough,
18
prefried, and thaw-and-sell, and the opening of a new 27-acre
19
facility in Springfield in 1997; he and co-owner, David
20
Waltrip, retired after Mel-O-Cream Donuts International, Inc.
21
was sold in 2019; and
22
WHEREAS, Kelly Grant routinely gave back to others, and he

was honored by the Vietnam Veterans of America National
2
Convention in 2015 for Mel-O-Cream's part in shipping between
3
4,000 and 5,000 dozen doughnuts to servicemen overseas, mostly
4
in Vietnam; and
5
WHEREAS, Kelly Grant was a longtime member of the Rotary
6
Club of Springfield South; in his spare time, he enjoyed
7
partaking in woodworking projects, traveling with Karen,
8
reading a good book, and cooking and baking; and
9
WHEREAS, Kelly Grant was preceded in death by his parents;
10
his son, Kelly W. Grant; his brothers, Gerald "Pete",
11
Franklin, and Norman Grant; and his sister, Glenda Warren; and
12
WHEREAS, Kelly Grant is survived by his wife, Karen; his
13
daughters, Kemalie (Gerald) Winter, Kristine Grant, and Lisa
14
Rinnus; seven grandchildren; his sister, Dorlis Pearce; his
15
daughter-in-law, Mary Grant; 18 great-grandchildren; and
16
several nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
17
RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
18
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
19
Kelly Albert Grant Jr. and extend our sincere condolences to
20
his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
21
further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2
presented to the family of Kelly Grant as an expression of our
3
deepest sympathy.
