SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Genetic counselors empower patients and their
3
families with vital healthcare information, guidance, and
4
emotional support to help them understand their family
5
history, evaluate genetic testing options, and make informed
6
choices based on test results; and

7

WHEREAS, There are more than 150 certified genetic
8
counselors working in prenatal, fertility, pediatric,
9
metabolic, cardiovascular, neurological, and cancer care in
10
Illinois; and

11

WHEREAS, Many people benefit from increased genetic
12
sequencing research and genetic counseling, including
13
individuals with a condition linked to a specific gene or
14
those who have a family history of an inherited disease; and

15

WHEREAS, The 5,000 genetic counselors across the country
16
streamline the healthcare industry by ensuring the right tests
17
are being ordered, avoiding costly and unnecessary expenses
18
and tests, by helping patients and providers understand
19
complex test results and how to best use this information, by
20
helping consult with potential parents on the intimidating
21
prospect of passing on inherited diseases, by sharing
22
information with family members, and by providing

recommendations for community support services; therefore, be
2
it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
4
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare November
5
12, 2026 as Genetic Counselor Appreciation Day in the State of
6
Illinois; and be it further

7

RESOLVED, That we recognize that the sequencing of the
8
human genome is one of the most significant scientific
9
accomplishments in the past 100 years and express our support
10
for genetic counselors, who are using this research to improve
11
the lives of many throughout the State.
