SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3
congratulate Dr. Lawrence Van Oyen, professor of music at
4
North Central College in Naperville, on the occasion of his
5
retirement following a distinguished career dedicated to music
6
education, performance, and community service; and

7

WHEREAS, Dr. Van Oyen is a graduate of Michigan State
8
University, where he dedicated himself to music education
9
before teaching for three years in the Michigan public
10
schools, completing his master's degree, and serving as the
11
director of bands and instructor of saxophone at Peru State
12
College in Nebraska; and

13

WHEREAS, Since 1992, Dr. Van Oyen has served as professor
14
of music, director of bands, and instructor of saxophone at
15
North Central College, where for over three decades he has
16
shaped the musical lives of countless students, instilling in
17
them technical skill, artistic discipline, and a lifelong
18
appreciation for the power of music; and

19

WHEREAS, Dr. Van Oyen's profound impact as a teacher and
20
mentor has been recognized by North Central College through
21
the Dissinger Award for distinguished teaching and leadership,
22
which he has received twice, and his colleagues and students

alike know him as someone who takes the time to establish a
2
personal connection with every student, whose door is always
3
open, and who cares deeply for the well-being of those around
4
him; and

5

WHEREAS, The North Central College Concert Winds has
6
developed a widely recognized reputation for its technical
7
precision and exceptional musicianship under Dr. Van Oyen's
8
leadership, and he has fostered a culture of genuineness and
9
kindness that is deeply embedded in the band program and will
10
remain as a lasting part of his legacy; and

11

WHEREAS, Dr. Van Oyen is an accomplished performer, having
12
won the Eastern Michigan Concerto contest and served as the
13
principal alto saxophonist on the recording Sea Drift: Wind
14
Music of Anthony Iannaccone on the Albany label, and he is a
15
highly sought-after saxophone soloist, clinician, adjudicator,
16
and private instructor throughout the Midwest; and

17

WHEREAS, Dr. Van Oyen has pursued innovative
18
interdisciplinary work at North Central College, collaborating
19
with Dr. Richard Wilders of the mathematics department on
20
research exploring the relationships found in math, music, and
21
art, with their findings published in the national journals
22
Mathematics Teacher and Mathematics Teaching in the Middle
23
School, and presenting Across the Curriculum recitals in

collaboration with faculty from a variety of departments; and

2

WHEREAS, Dr. Van Oyen is the founder of the Chords for Kids
3
concert program at North Central College, which has been
4
dedicated to providing meaningful concert experiences for
5
children with autism and their families for 19 years, opening
6
the doors of live musical performance to those who might
7
otherwise face barriers to attending such events; Dr. Van Oyen
8
has presented at both state and national conventions of the
9
National Association for Music Education to share his
10
expertise so that similar programs may be established across
11
the nation; therefore, be it

12

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
13
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Dr.
14
Lawrence Van Oyen, professor of music at North Central
15
College, on the occasion of his retirement for his decades of
16
distinguished service to music education, his extraordinary
17
dedication to enriching the lives of children with autism and
18
their families through the Chords for Kids program, and the
19
profound and lasting impact he has had on his students and
20
colleagues throughout his remarkable career; and be it further

21

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22
presented to Dr. Van Oyen as an expression of our esteem and
23
respect.
