SENATE RESOLUTION

2

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3
to learn of the death of Buford M. Green, who passed away on
4
March 9, 2025; and

5

WHEREAS, Buford Green, the son of David and Annie Green,
6
was born in Milltown, Kentucky on September 13, 1941; he
7
graduated from Virginia High School and Illinois College; and

8

WHEREAS, Buford Green began his journalism career at the
9
Jacksonville Journal-Courier while a student at Illinois
10
College, and he became sports editor in 1964, serving in that
11
role for 20 years before becoming managing editor in 1983 and
12
then resigning in 1991; he subsequently worked as editor of
13
the Showcase newspaper in Jacksonville, and he later served as
14
a sports/general assignment writer for the State-Journal
15
Register, retiring in 2007; he was also a contributing writer
16
for the Jacksonville Source newspaper; he wrote more than
17
20,000 bylined articles for the various publications during
18
the course of his career; and

19

WHEREAS, Buford Green was a co-host of the Sportsline
20
call-in show on WLDS radio for 56 years, and he taught at
21
Triopia Junior High School and Routt High School; and

WHEREAS, Buford Green was a member of the Illinois High
2
School Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the
3
Jacksonville High School Sports Hall of Fame, and he was a
4
founding member of the Jacksonville High School Hall of Fame,
5
the Illinois College Sports Hall of Fame, and the Jacksonville
6
Area Hall of Fame, where he served as president for many years;
7
he was also a long-time member of AMBUCS, the Elks Club, and
8
the Masonic Lodge; and

9

WHEREAS, Buford Green was a longtime baseball and softball
10
player who also served as a manager and coach for youth
11
baseball and softball teams and as an umpire for many years;
12
and

13

WHEREAS, Buford Green was preceded in death by his parents
14
and his brother, Murl Green; and

15

WHEREAS, Buford Green is survived by his children, Chris
16
(Cheryl) Green and Brenda (Bob) Cunningham; three
17
grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his sister, Wanda
18
White; his niece and nephews; and numerous cousins; therefore,
19
be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
21
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
22
Buford M. Green and extend our sincere condolences to his

family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
2
further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4
presented to the family of Buford Green as an expression of our
5
deepest sympathy.
