SENATE RESOLUTION
2
WHEREAS, On January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
3
Incorporated was founded by Ethel Hedgemon Lyle and eight
4
other collegiate women with the mission to cultivate and
5
encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote
6
unity and friendship among college women, to study and help
7
alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to
8
improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive
9
interest in college life, and to be of "Service to All
10
Mankind"; and
11
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has a
12
rich history of social action; in 1915, Alpha Kappa Alpha
13
Sorority, Incorporated hosted its first political action
14
conference with human rights activist and Illinois Congressman
15
Martin B. Madden as the speaker, marking its commitment to
16
progress through advocacy, education, social progress, and
17
political engagement; and
18
WHEREAS, Soaring to greater heights of service and
19
sisterhood, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated
20
established its headquarters on the South Side of Chicago in
21
1949, becoming more complex, while expanding to mobilize over
22
390,000 initiated members in 1,120 chapters in 50 U.S. states
23
and territories and 15 nations, focusing on advocacy and

service projects aimed at improving socioeconomic, racial,
2
political, and environmental issues, further amplifying its
3
influence; and
4
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated's
5
diverse collaborative work throughout the United States and
6
including, but not limited to, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada,
7
the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and the United Arab Emirates
8
integrates an elevated level of personal engagement with the
9
strong bonds of sisterhood and a productive network of
10
community partners; and
11
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated's annual
12
advocacy day event is an opportunity for its members to meet
13
and discuss proposed legislation with Illinois lawmakers,
14
engage in educational workshops concentrated on the Illinois
15
Legislative Black Caucus four key pillars of Illinois
16
government, and explore ways to enhance civic engagement; and
17
WHEREAS, Illinois is home to 50 Alpha Kappa Alpha
18
Sorority, Incorporated chapters, of which 18 are located on
19
college and university campuses and 32 are alumnae chapters
20
located in communities throughout the State; and
21
WHEREAS, The Illinois chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha
22
Sorority, Incorporated along with chapters located throughout

Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota,
2
Wisconsin, and St. Louis and Cape Girardeau, Missouri are
3
designated as the sorority's Central Region, and this region
4
is home to 94 empowered and engaged chapters focused on
5
advocacy and service; and
6
WHEREAS, On May 6, 2026, Illinois members of Alpha Kappa
7
Alpha Sorority, Incorporated will participate in Alpha Kappa
8
Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Day at the Illinois State
9
Capitol; and
10
WHEREAS, In a collective effort to advance the priorities
11
of the respective communities in which they serve, the
12
Illinois delegation of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
13
Incorporated will be joined by the Illinois delegation of
14
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated for Alpha Kappa Alpha
15
Sorority, Incorporated Day at the Illinois State Capitol for
16
the empowerment of the people; therefore, be it
17
RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
18
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare May 6, 2026
19
as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Day in the State
20
of Illinois.
