SENATE RESOLUTION
2
WHEREAS, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is an inherited
3
condition that affects the connective tissues of the body; and
4
WHEREAS, Connective tissues provide support in skin,
5
tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, internal organs, and bones;
6
and
7
WHEREAS, There are 13 types of EDS caused by genetic
8
defects in collagen, one of the major structural components of
9
the body; and
10
WHEREAS, Symptoms of EDS may include joint hypermobility,
11
loose or unstable joints that dislocate easily, joint pain,
12
skin that bruises easily, digestive problems, dizziness and
13
increased heart rate when standing up, and problems with
14
internal organs; and
15
WHEREAS, Early and accurate diagnosis can provide the
16
opportunity to create lifesaving medical plans, to improve
17
quality of life, and to access appropriate medical care; and
18
WHEREAS, Eighty percent of people with EDS also have
19
postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS); and

WHEREAS, POTS causes an individual's heart rate to
2
increase quickly after getting up from sitting or lying down,
3
causing symptoms such as dizziness or light-headedness,
4
fainting or almost fainting, heart palpitations, chest pain,
5
shortness of breath, and shaking or sweating; and
6
WHEREAS, Those suffering from POTS may also have
7
additional medical problems, including digestion problems such
8
as feeling or being sick, diarrhea, constipation, bloating and
9
stomach pain, headaches and problems with sight such as
10
blurred vision or tunnel vision, hands and feet looking
11
purple, weakness and extreme fatigue, and problems with
12
thinking, memory, and concentration; and
13
WHEREAS, It is estimated that the prevalence of all types
14
of EDS combined affect at least 1 in 500 people worldwide, and
15
recent research indicates that it is likely underdiagnosed;
16
and
17
WHEREAS, EDS may significantly decrease both quantity and
18
quality of life for those affected; and
19
WHEREAS, Currently, there is no treatment and no known
20
cure for EDS; however, further medical research and awareness
21
could bring hope for those with EDS; and

WHEREAS, A network of EDS support groups can help connect
2
those managing life with this disease; additionally, they can
3
help inform the health care community and the public;
4
therefore, be it
5
RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
6
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare May 2026 as
7
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) Awareness Month in honor of those
8
surviving daily with EDS, and we encourage scientific research
9
and funding towards finding a cure.
