SENATE RESOLUTION
2
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3
congratulate Rabbi Michael Siegel on the occasion of his
4
retirement as Senior Rabbi of the Anshe Emet Synagogue; and
5
WHEREAS, Rabbi Siegel was ordained by the Jewish
6
Theological Seminary of America in 1982, where he received his
7
Master of Hebrew Letters; and
8
WHEREAS, Rabbi Siegel joined the Anshe Emet Synagogue as
9
Assistant Rabbi in 1982 and was named Senior Rabbi in 1990, and
10
for 44 years, he has committed himself to the development of an
11
open, caring, and spiritual community and has sought to
12
further the historic role the Anshe Emet Synagogue has played
13
in Chicago and on the national Jewish scene; and
14
WHEREAS, Rabbi Siegel, beloved by his congregation, has
15
served as a dedicated leader in the Jewish community in a
16
variety of roles, including on the Rabbinical Assembly of
17
America Executive Council, the Jewish Theological Seminary
18
Chancellor's Rabbinic Cabinet, and the MAZON: A Jewish
19
Response to Hunger Executive Board; he is a past president of
20
the Chicago Board of Rabbis and has served as national
21
co-chair of the Magen Tzedek Commission; he helped to form the
22
Hayom Coalition, which is committed to the transformation of

institutions and a reenvisioning of the Conservative Movement;
2
and
3
WHEREAS, Rabbi Siegel has striven to establish dialogue
4
and deepen understanding between Chicago's African American
5
and Jewish communities through outreach to clergy, recently
6
working to create a joint study group for religious leaders;
7
he has helped to develop teen programming that brings these
8
communities together to create partnerships and has conducted
9
Hunger Seders to change perceptions and build relationships;
10
he currently serves on the Bright Star Community Outreach
11
(BSCO) TURN Center Board of Directors; and
12
WHEREAS, Rabbi Siegel has represented the Anshe Emet
13
Synagogue in Washington, D.C. on numerous occasions, including
14
as a member of the United States Honorary Delegation
15
commemorating the 60th anniversary of Israel's statehood in
16
2008 and as a guest chaplain of the United States House of
17
Representatives in 2015; and
18
WHEREAS, Rabbi Siegel and his wife, Janet, are the parents
19
of four children, Joseph, Rebecca, Deena, and Emma; therefore,
20

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
22
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Rabbi

Michael Siegel on his retirement as Senior Rabbi of the Anshe
2
Emet Synagogue, and we thank him for his commitment to his
3
community and to the State of Illinois; and be it further
4
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5
presented to Rabbi Siegel as an expression of our esteem and
6
respect.
