SENATE RESOLUTION

2

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3
to learn of the death of Luke William Peterson of Chatham, who
4

5

WHEREAS, Luke Peterson was born to Emily (Reid) and Chad
6
Peterson in Chicago on September 19, 2012; he and his family
7
moved to Springfield in 2014, and he proceeded to attend
8
Ball-Chatham Community Unit School District 5 to start
9
kindergarten, where he was quickly labeled a quiet leader; and

10

WHEREAS, Luke Peterson, known by many as an exceptional
11
baseball and basketball player in the Springfield and Chatham
12
communities, took a deep interest in athletics from an early
13
age and proved to be a natural at most sports he tried; he
14
loved competing, especially against his brother, Reid, and
15
their one-on-one competitions were heated but full of
16
laughter; and

17

WHEREAS, Luke Peterson was a hard worker, spending
18
countless hours shooting hoops, pitching, taking batting
19
practice, and attending developmental camps; before long, he
20
earned a spot on a series of highly-competitive traveling
21
teams; as a gifted player, he often played up a level with
22
teammates who were a year older; his ability, commitment, and

kindness made him a beloved member on each team he joined,
2
earning him countless friends along the way; and

3

WHEREAS, Luke Peterson was an intense competitor who wore
4
#53, when possible, to honor his grandfather's race car
5
number; a talented left-handed pitcher with a smooth, powerful
6
swing, he also displayed a natural grace of movement and
7
tremendous vision on the basketball court; he developed a
8
reputation among his coaches and teammates for delivering
9
intense, high-stakes moments, earning him the nickname "Cool
10
Man Luke"; his poise under pressure translated into some
11
triumphant plays and dramatic victories over the course of his
12
career; in his typically understated manner, he would
13
celebrate such moments with a quick fist pump, a headshake,
14
and a satisfied smile; and

15

WHEREAS, Luke Peterson, though quiet, still possessed
16
plenty of swagger and personality; he had confidence in his
17
style from a young age, wearing flashy clothes, sporting lots
18
of athletic gear to match his favorite players, and rocking a
19
long-flowing mullet by age seven; in his early years, he loved
20
dressing up, wearing a Paw Patrol or Ninja Turtles costume on a
21
seemingly daily basis; and

22

WHEREAS, Beyond his athletic pursuits, Luke Peterson loved
23
spending time with his friends, especially his brothers in

Corley; though he was always popular among his peers, he
3
remained inclusive and had an innate sweetness to him, always
4
looking to connect with people and bring them into his circle;
5
he also enjoyed spending time with his younger cousins,
6
flashing his radiant, slow smile as they sang and danced
7
around the room; and

8

WHEREAS, Luke Peterson was an exceptional son who adored

his parents and looked up to his brother, Reid, and he will be

man who pursued excellence in everything he did; and
