WHEREAS,

the

independence

of

the

Supreme

Court

of

the

United

States

is

essential

to

the

preservation

of

6

our

constitutional

system

of

government;

and

7

WHEREAS,

expanding

the

number

of

justices

on

the

8

Supreme

Court

of

the

United

States

for

political

9

purposes

threatens

the

Supreme

Court’s

long-term

10

stability

and

undermines

public

confidence

in

our

11

judiciary;

and

12

WHEREAS,

an

amendment

to

the

Constitution

of

the

13

United

States

is

necessary

to

ensure

that

the

number

14

of

Supreme

Court

justices

remains

fixed

at

nine;

NOW

15

THEREFORE,

16

BE

IT

RESOLVED

BY

THE

SENATE,

That

the

Senate

urges

17

the

United

States

Congress

to

propose

an

amendment

to

18

the

Constitution

of

the

United

States

that

reads

“The

19

supreme

Court

of

the

United

States

shall

be

composed

20

of

nine

Judges.”;

and

21

BE

IT

FURTHER

RESOLVED,

That

the

Secretary

of

the

22

Senate

shall

send

certified

copies

of

this

resolution

23

to

the

President

of

the

United

States,

the

President

24

of

the

United

States

Senate,

the

Speaker

of

the

United

25

States

House

of

Representatives,

and

members

of

the

26

Iowa

congressional

delegation.
