HOUSE BILL No. 2488
By Committee on Education
Requested by Representative Steele
1-21
AN ACT concerning postsecondary education; relating to the university of
Kansas school of medicine; requiring such school to use a letter
grading system or other tiered grading system to assess student
performance.
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Kansas:
Section 1. (a) The legislature hereby finds that the purpose of medical
school is to teach the best candidates to be the best doctor that they can
become. In order to do so, candidates should be placed into an
environment where they are provided feedback on their coursework in an
objective manner, compared to their classmates. A grading system
encourages preparedness in the pupil as well as positive performance and
rising outcomes. Better grades will lead to better medical professionals. As
a result, it is the intent of the legislature to require letter grades or a tiered
system with at least four designations for each course offered at a medical
school.
(b) The university of Kansas school of medicine shall require that any
coursework offered in the curriculum for a medical degree or certificate
assess a student's performance on such coursework based on the
assignment of a letter grade from A to F or a tiered system with at least
four designations.
Sec. 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its
publication in the statute book.
