AN ACT concerning traffic regulations; relating to turning movements and
required signals; creating a definition for a roundabout; requiring that
turn signals be used when moving right or left or exiting a roundabout;
amending K.S.A. 8-1548 and repealing the existing section.
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Kansas:
New Section 1. "Roundabout" means an intersection characterized by
a circulatory roadway, channelized approaches and yield control of
entering traffic. A "roundabout" includes the area bounded by the
outermost curb line or, if there is no curb, the edge of the pavement and
any crosswalks on any entering or exiting roadway.
Sec. 2. K.S.A. 8-1548 is hereby amended to read as follows: 8-1548.
(a) No person shall turn operate a vehicle to turn or move right or left
upon a roadway unless and until such movement can be made with
reasonable safety, nor or without giving an appropriate signal in the
manner hereinafter provided in this section and K.S.A. 8-1549 and 8-1550,
and amendments thereto.
(b) A signal of intention to turn or move right or left when required
shall be given continuously during not less than the last one hundred (100)
feet traveled by the vehicle before turning.
(c) No person shall stop or suddenly decrease the speed of a vehicle
without first giving an appropriate signal, in the manner provided herein,
to the driver of any vehicle immediately to the rear when there is
opportunity to give such signal.
(d) The signals required on vehicles by subsection (b) of K.S.A. 8-
1549, and amendments thereto, shall not be flashed on one side only on a
disabled vehicle, flashed as a courtesy or "do pass" signal to operators of
other vehicles approaching from the rear, nor be flashed on one side only
of a parked vehicle except as may be necessary for compliance with this
section.
(e) Except for the provisions of subsection (b), this section and K.S.A.
8-1549 and 8-1550, and amendments thereto, shall apply to any person
operating a vehicle to move right or left within a roundabout or to exit
from any position within a roundabout.
Sec. 3. K.S.A. 8-1548 is hereby repealed.
Sec. 4. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its
