AN ACT relating to physician continuing medical education. 1
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: 2
Section 1. KRS 311.601 is amended to read as follows: 3
(1) The board may promulgate[adopt] reasonable administrative[rules and] regulations 4
to effectuate and implement[ the provisions of] KRS 311.550 to 311.620, including 5
but not limited to administrative regulations designed to ensure the continuing 6
professional competency of present and future licensees. As an adjunct to the power 7
conferred upon the board by this section, the board may require licensees to submit 8
to interrogation as to the nature and extent of their postgraduate medical education 9
and to require licensees found to be deficient in their efforts to keep abreast of new 10
methods and technology, to obtain additional instruction and training therein. 11
(2) As part of the continuing medical education which the board adopts to ensure 12
continuing professional competency of present and future licensees, the board shall 13
ensure that: 14
(a) Current practicing pediatricians, including those certified in medicine and 15
pediatrics, radiologists, family pra ctitioners, and those physicians practicing 16
in an emergency medicine or urgent care setting, demonstrate completion of a 17
one (1) time course of at least one (1) hour of continuing medical education 18
approved by the board and covering the recognition and pre vention of 19
pediatric abusive head trauma, as defined in KRS 620.020, prior to December 20
31, 2017;[ and] 21
(b) Future practicing pediatricians, including those certified in medicine and 22
pediatrics, radiologists, family practitioners, and those physicians who will 23
practice in an emergency medicine or urgent care setting, demonstrate 24
completion of a one (1) time cours e of at least one (1) hour of continuing 25
medical education, or its equivalent, approved by the board and covering the 26
recognition and prevention of pediatric abusive head trauma, as defined in 27

KRS 620.020, within five (5) years of licensure. Future practic ing 1
pediatricians, including those certified in medicine and pediatrics, 2
radiologists, family practitioners, and those physicians who will practice in an 3
emergency medicine or urgent care setting may apply pediatric abusive head 4
trauma curriculum taught in their medical school education to count towards 5
the required one (1) hour of continuing medical education; and 6
(c) Current practicing physicians demonstrate completion of at least three (3) 7
hours of continuing medical education every three (3) years that is approved 8
by the board and covers the recognition and treatment of mental health 9
issues, including but not limited to emotional, psychological, and social 10
well-being issues and mental health disorders. 11
