AN ACT relating to teachers of exceptional children. 1
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: 2
SECTION 1. A NEW SECTION OF KRS CHAPTER 157 IS CREATED TO 3
READ AS FOLLOWS: 4
(1) Notwithstanding any other statute to the contrary, a public school teacher, or a 5
teacher employed at the Kentucky School for the Blind or Kentucky School for 6
the Deaf operated by the Department of Education, who holds a professional 7
certificate for teaching exceptional children, and who is employed in a classroom 8
teacher position requiring the certificate, shall receive an annual salary 9
supplement of ten thousand dollar s ($10,000) for each year the conditions are 10
met during the life of the certificate. If an annual supplement amount 11
appropriated by the General Assembly is less than ten thousand dollars ($10,000), 12
the local board may provide an additional supplement up to the amount required 13
for the total annual supplement to equal ten thousand dollars ($10,000). The 14
supplement shall be added to: 15
(a) The teacher's base salary on the local board's single salary schedule and 16
shall be considered in the calculation for contrib utions to the Kentucky 17
Teachers' Retirement System; or 18
(b) The state -employed teacher's base salary and shall be considered in the 19
calculation for contributions to the Kentucky Teachers' Retirement System. 20
(2) If a teacher who holds a professional certificate for teaching exceptional children 21
becomes no longer employed in a classroom teacher position requiring the 22
certificate, the supplement provided under subsection (1) of this section shall 23
cease. 24
(3) A local board of education or the Department of Education shall request 25
reimbursement for these purposes from the fund to support education excellence 26
described in KRS 157.330 27
