A JOINT RESOLUTION designating the S/SGT David W. Harris Memorial Bridge 1
in Carter County. 2
WHEREAS, David W. Harris, one of seven children of Roy and Pearl Everman 3
Harris, was born on November 26, 1918, in Carter County, Kentucky; and 4
WHEREAS, David W. Harris served in the United States Army Air Forces during 5
World War II, enlisting as a private in the 358th Bomb Squadron, 303rd Bomber Group, 6
on May 11, 1942, and achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant; and 7
WHEREAS, S/SGT David W. Harris was trained as an airplane mechanic at the 8
Army Air Force Technical School, Amarillo Army Air Field, Amarillo, Texas; and 9
WHEREAS, following training, S/SGT David W. Harris was sent to England to 10
serve as a flight engineer/top turret gunner on a B-17 bomber; and 11
WHEREAS, S/SGT David W. Harris was tragically killed on February 22, 1944, 12
when his bomber collided in mid -air with another B -17 bomber over England while 13
forming up for a mission to bomb the aircraft industry at Aschersleben, Germany; and 14
WHEREAS, S/SGT David W. Harris was awarded the Air Medal, the Purple Heart, 15
the World War II Victory Medal, and the American Campaign Medal and is interred in 16
the Cambridge American Cemetery, in Cambridge, England; and 17
WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant David W. Harris served with honor and valor during 18
World War II and this bridge designation will serve as a reminder of his life, sacrifice, 19
and dedication to our nation; 20
NOW, THEREFORE, 21
Be it resolved by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: 22
Section 1. The Transportation Cabinet shall designate the bridge on Kentucky 23
Route 9 in Carter County at mile point 11.01 (Bridge Number 022B00149N), as the 24
"S/SGT David W. Harris Memorial Bridge" and shall, within 30 days of the effective 25
date of this Resolution, erect appropriate signage denoting this designation. 26
