A JOINT RESOLUTION designating the Representative Bob DeWeese Memorial 1
Highway in Jefferson County. 2
WHEREAS, Bobby "Bob" Miller DeWeese was a son of this Commonw ealth, 3
having been born in the La Center community of Ballard County on November 8, 1934; 4
and 5
WHEREAS, raised by his cherished grandparents, Grace and John R. Miller, Bob 6
DeWeese was drawn to the medical profession early in life by assisting the man who 7
would later become his stepfather, Dr. William Coffee, in his veterinary practice; and 8
WHEREAS, Bob DeWeese began his higher education at the University of 9
Kentucky in 1953 and went on to graduate from the University of Louisville Medical 10
School. He practi ced medicine at several hospitals in Louisville, and proudly served as 11
president of the Louisville Surgical Society and chief of staff at multiple institutions; and 12
WHEREAS, Bob DeWeese turned to politics in the 1990s, and it was in this area 13
that he made an indelible mark on the Commonwealth. He was elected to the Kentucky 14
House of Representatives in 1992, and served that body for 24 years as State 15
Representative of the 48th District, including as the Republican Caucus Chairman for 14 16
years; and 17
WHEREAS, after retiring from medicine, Bob DeWeese became a fierce advocate 18
for healthcare issues in the General Assembly while maintaining his trademark sense of 19
loyalty to his home city of Louisville. He was instrumental in the construction of the 20
Westport Road-Watterson Expressway interchange, and became renowned for his ability 21
to work with Kentucky's colleges and universities. An ardent supporter of the "Bucks for 22
Brains" program, he tried throughout his years in public service to help institutions of 23
higher le arning carry out their missions and to see that the Commonwealth's learners 24
were given the opportunity to flourish, just as he had once done; and 25
WHEREAS, in 2000, Bob DeWeese was honored with the Dr. Nathan Davis Award 26
by the American Medical Association for his work as an outstanding legislator; and 27

WHEREAS, Bob DeWeese was a member of the Rotary Club of Louisville and the 1
University of Kentucky Alumni Association. He served on the University of Louisville 2
Board of Overseers and the UofL Cancer Board, an d was an avid supporter of The 3
Healing Place; and 4
WHEREAS, Bob DeWeese was a faithful servant of God, and for many years he 5
and his beloved wife, Angie, were members of Christ Church United Methodist; and 6
WHEREAS, Bob DeWeese proudly showed his love for the Commonwealth and 7
America by always displaying both flags; and 8
WHEREAS, Bob DeWeese loved the outdoors, was a avid gardener, enjoyed golf, 9
and, most importantly, treasured spending time with his children and grandchildren; and 10
WHEREAS, Bobby "Bob" Miller DeWeese, renowned Kentucky physician; 11
esteemed fo rmer member of the Kentucky House of Representatives; and cherished 12
husband, father, and grandfather, departed this earthly life and entered into the Kingdom 13
of Heaven on November 25, 2020, leaving all those whose lives he touched in solemn 14
mourning; and 15
WHEREAS, whether in the role of doctor, legislator, or volunteer, the extraordinary 16
life and legacy of public service exemplified by Representative Bob DeWeese is worthy 17
of tangible public recognition; 18
NOW, THEREFORE, 19
Be it resolved by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: 20
Section 1. The Transportation Cabinet shall designate the portion of United 21
States Route 42 in Jefferson County, from its intersection with Mockingbird Valley Road 22
at mile point 3.279 to the Jefferson/Oldham County line, as the "Representative Bob 23
DeWeese Memorial Highway" and shall, within 30 days of the effective date of this 24
Resolution, erect appropriate signage denoting this designation. This designation shall 25
supersede any previous honorary designation for this section of highway. 26
