A JOINT RESOLUTION designating the PFC Denver Wells Memorial Highway in 1

WHEREAS, Denver Wells was born on June 29, 1925, to Floyd "Loyd" Wells and 3
Alpha Zetta (Browning) Wells, in Leslie County, Kentucky; and 4
WHEREAS, Denver Wells joined the United States Marine Corps near the close of 5
World War II, and was assigned the title of Private First Class; and 6
WHEREAS, PFC Denver Wells served in the Pacific Theater on the USS Curtiss, 7
the first seaplane tender constructed for the United States Navy, which was just returning 8
to full service after it was attacked during the Japanese assault on Pearl Harbor; and 9
WHEREAS, PFC Denver Wells was aboard the USS Curti ss when it sailed towards 10
the island of Okinawa to join forces at the Battle of Okinawa, one of the largest battles of 11
the Pacific War; and 12
WHEREAS, PFC Denver Wells arrived offshore to join the battle on May 22, 1945, 13
where the USS Curtiss was to serve as the flagship for Commander, Fleet Air Wing 1; 14
and 15
WHEREAS, on June 21, 1945, just one day before the close of the Battle of 16
Okinawa, a kamikaze and its bomb ripped two holes into the hull of the USS Curtiss, 17
killing 35 servicemen, including PFC Denver Wells; and 18
WHEREAS, at the time of his death, PFC Denver Wells had been aboard the USS 19
Curtiss for less than two months and was just eight days shy of his 20th birthday; and 20
WHEREAS, PFC Denver Wells represents the values of service and sacrifice that 21
continue to define our Commonwealth and this great Nation; 22
NOW, THEREFORE, 23
Be it resolved by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: 24
Section 1. The Transportation Cabinet shall designate a portion of Kentucky 25
Route 2057 in Leslie County, from mile point 2.4 to mile point 3, as the "PFC Denver 26
Wells Memorial Highway" and shall, within 30 days of the effective date of this 27
