A RESOLUTION recognizing August 21, 2026, as Senior Citizens Day in the 1
Commonwealth of Kentucky. 2
WHEREAS, in a world that is continually developing, it is critical ly important to 3
acknowledge the citizens of the Commonwealth who carry with them a lifetime of 4
experiences, wisdom, and influence on society; and 5
WHEREAS, according to the United States Census Bureau, senior citizens make up 6
17.6 percent of the population in the Commonwealth; and 7
WHEREAS, in recognition of the valuable role of senior citizens in American 8
society, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed August 21, 1988, as National Senior 9
Citizens Day in the United States, coinciding with the birthday of former P resident and 10
noted senior citizens' rights advocate Benjamin Harrison. The day gained world attention 11
and soon became a global celebration; and 12
WHEREAS, World Senior Citizens Day, now celebrated annually on August 21 of 13
each year, serves to highlight and r espect the insights, accomplishments, and struggles of 14
senior citizens in modern society; and 15
WHEREAS, World Senior Citizens Day acknowledges the significant contributions 16
and commitments that senior citizens have made throughout their lives to their fami lies, 17
communities, and society as a whole; and 18
WHEREAS, World Senior Citizens Day underlines the significance of approaching 19
senior citizens with dignity and respect, regardless of any age-related difficulties that they 20
may be facing; and 21
WHEREAS, World Se nior Citizens Day reveals insight into the different issues 22
influencing seniors, including medical care, social isolation, financial insecurity, and 23
elder abuse; and 24
WHEREAS, World Senior Citizens Day urges young people to engage and interact 25
with their elders, bridging generational gaps and safeguarding traditions; and 26
WHEREAS, World Senior Citizens Day serves as a stage to advocate for the rights 27

of seniors, ensuring that they receive adequate medical care, social services, and quality 1
of life; 2
NOW, THEREFORE, 3
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the 4
Commonwealth of Kentucky: 5
Section 1. The members of the House of Representatives hereby recognize 6
August 21, 2026, as Senior Citizens Day in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. 7
Section 2. When the House adjourns this day, it does so in honor of all senior 8
citizens and acknowledges their lifetime of invaluable contributions. 9
Section 3. The Clerk of the House is directed to transmit a copy of this 10
Resolution to Representative Beverly Chester-Burton. 11
