A RESOLUTION recognizing May 2026 as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis 1
Awareness Month. 2
WHEREAS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), known by many as Lou Gehrig's 3
disease, is a progressive fatal neurodegenerative disease in which a person's brain loses 4
connection with the muscles, slowly taking away the ability to walk, talk, eat, and 5
breathe; and 6
WHEREAS, thousands of new ALS cases are reported every year, and estimates 7
show that every 90 minutes someone is diagnosed with ALS and someone passes away 8
from ALS; and 9
WHEREAS, on average, patients diagnosed with ALS only survive two to five 10
years from the time of diagnosis; and 11
WHEREAS, the exact causes of ALS are unknown and there is no known cure; and 12
WHEREAS, people who have served in the military are more likely to develop 13
ALS and die from the disease than those with no history of military service; and 14
WHEREAS, securing access to new therapies, durable medical equipment, and 15
communication technologies is of vital importance to people living with ALS; and 16
WHEREAS, clinical trials play a pivotal role in evaluating new treatments, 17
enhancing quality of life, and fostering assistive technologies for those living with ALS; 18
and 19
WHEREAS, the ALS Association, as the largest philanthropic funder of ALS 20
research globally, has committed over $154 million to support more than 550 projects 21
across the United States and 18 other countries; and 22
WHEREAS, the ALS Association is committed to accelerating the pace of 23
discovery fueled by the hope that one day ALS will be a livable disease for everyone, 24
everywhere, until a cure can be found; and 25
WHEREAS, ALS Awareness Month provides an opportunity to increase public 26
awareness of the dire circumstances of people with ALS, acknowledge the terrible impact 27

this disease has on those individuals and their families, and support research to eradicate 1
this disease; 2
NOW, THEREFORE, 3
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of th e 4
Commonwealth of Kentucky: 5
Section 1. The members of the House of Representatives hereby recognize May 6
2026 as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Awareness Month. 7
Section 2. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit a 8
copy of this Resolution to Representative Jason Nemes. 9
