A RESOLUTION recognizing January 2026 as Kentucky Mentorship Month. 1
WHEREAS, the goals of Kentucky mentorship month are to raise awareness of and 2
celebrate the powe rful impact of mentoring relationships, recruit new mentors, and 3
encourage institutions to integrate quality mentoring into their policies, practices, and 4
programs; and 5
WHEREAS, quality mentoring fosters positive life and social skills, promotes self -6
esteem, bolsters academic achievement and college access, supports career exploration, 7
and nurtures youth leadership development; and 8
WHEREAS, mentoring happens in many settings, including community -based 9
programs, elementary and secondary schools, colleges, go vernment agencies, religious 10
institutions, and the workplace; and 11
WHEREAS, mentoring happens in various ways, including formal mentoring 12
matches and informal relationships with teachers, coaches, neighbors, faith leaders, and 13
others; and 14
WHEREAS, mentoring encourages positive youth development and smart daily 15
behaviors; and 16
WHEREAS, mentors help young people set career goals and can help connect 17
mentees to industry professionals to train for and find jobs; and 18
WHEREAS, research has found that young people w ho had a mentor were, when 19
compared with their peers, less likely to start using drugs; and 20
WHEREAS, mentoring relationships can have a positive impact on mental health, 21
educational peer relationships, employment, and housing stability; and 22
WHEREAS, mentoring is both a prevention and intervention strategy that can 23
support young people in all aspects of their lives; and 24
WHEREAS, the benefits of mentors serve to link youth to economic and social 25
opportunity while also strengthening communities in the Commonwealth; and 26
WHEREAS, despite the benefits of mentoring, many young people grow up 27

without a mentor to offer real life guidance and support; and 1
WHEREAS, this "mentoring gap" demonstrates the need for collaboration between 2
the private, public, and nonprofit sectors to increase resources for mentorships for youth 3
in communities, schools, and workplaces; 4
NOW, THEREFORE, 5
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the 6
Commonwealth of Kentucky: 7
Section 1. The members of the House of Representatives hereby recognize 8
January 2026 as Kentucky Mentorship Month. 9
Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in 10
honor, recognition, and celebratio n of Kentucky's mentors and the youth they encourage 11
and support. 12
Section 3. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit a 13
copy of this Resolution to Representative DJ Johnson for delivery. 14
