A RESOLUTION recognizing and celebrating Hindu holidays and the resilience of 1
the Hindu people. 2
WHEREAS, the Hindu people have a rich cultural and spiritual heritag e that 3
emphasizes the importance of close family bonds, expression of gratitude, introspection 4
and renewal of faith, and harmony, unity, and togetherness; and 5
WHEREAS, Hindus celebrate Dashain, also called Vijaya Dashaimi, by honoring 6
the goddess Durga who prevailed over Mahishura, which is considered as a triumph of 7
good over evil; and 8
WHEREAS, on the 10th day of Dashain, Hindu elders place a tika, a mixture of 9
rice, yogurt, and vermillion, on younger Hindus to bless them with hopes for abundance 10
in the future; and 11
WHEREAS, during Dashain, Hindus visit temples and perform rituals to seek 12
blessings, express gratitude, and reflect on their spiritual journey; and 13
WHEREAS, during the festival of Laxmi Pooja, also known as Dipawali or Diwali, 14
Hindus celebrate Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity; and 15
WHEREAS, believing that the goddess will only reside in clean and tidy spaces, 16
Hindus thoroughly clean their homes and decorate them with butter lamps and electric 17
lights in hopes of receiving her blessings; and 18
WHEREAS, Hindus will also buy gold and silver, precious gemstones, new utensils 19
of copper, and brass and bronze for good luck, using the items to worship the goddess 20
Lakshmi at night; and 21
WHEREAS, during the festival of Bhaitika, Hindus celebrate and observe the 22
strong bond between siblings, especially between brothers and sisters; and 23
WHEREAS, the celebration of Bhaitika originated with Yama, the God of Death, 24
visiting his sister, Yamuna. During his visit, Yamuna welcomed him with a tika and 25
special prayers. Being so moved by this gesture, Yama blessed all brothers receiving a 26
tika with long life and prosperity; and 27

WHEREAS, continuing the tradition, sisters will mark their brothers' forehe ads 1
with a unique tika symbolizing love and prayers for protection and prosperity. As a sign 2
of gratitude for their blessing, the brothers will give back to their sisters presents or cash; 3
and 4
WHEREAS, Holi is celebrated as a victory of life over the cold dark winter, 5
welcoming the arrival of spring; and 6
WHEREAS, during Holi, Hindus celebrate Prahlada's victory over Holika, as a 7
victory of good over evil, reinforcing the belief in righteousness prevailing; and 8
WHEREAS, to celebrate Holi, Hindus play with br ight color powders, spray 9
colored water on each other and throw colored -water balloons. It is believed that the 10
combination of different colors takes all of the sorrow away and makes life itself more 11
colorful; and 12
WHEREAS, in their exercise of promoting in dividual and collective well -being, 13
truthfulness, compassion, and generosity, the Hindu people through their traditions and 14
customs have made a positive and lasting impact on this Commonwealth; 15
NOW, THEREFORE, 16
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the 17
Commonwealth of Kentucky: 18
Section 1. The House of Representatives hereby recognizes the Hindu holidays 19
of Holi, March 4, 2026; Dashain and Vijaya Dashaimi, October 21, 2026; Laxmi Pooja, 20
Dipawali, and Diwali, November 9, 2026; and Bhaitika, November 11, 2026, and 21
encourages all residents of the Commonwealth to celebrate these days to honor and 22
reflect upon the significant contributions of the Hindu people to this Commonwealth. 23
Section 2. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit a 24
copy of this Resolution to Representative Daniel Grossberg. 25
