A RESOLUTION honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 1
WHEREAS, this body rightfully honors those Americans whose lives create a 2
cultural and spiritual touchpoint for people across the world, and whose legacies embody 3
the very concepts of justice, truth, and equality; and 4
WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., being one such American, is duly honored 5
in this chamber on this day; and 6
WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, 7
Georgia, and was tragically killed on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee; and 8
WHEREAS, Dr. King's life traces the very firmament of the struggle for equal 9
rights, a struggle that is very much ongoing more than 50 years after his death; and 10
WHEREAS, from his education at Morehouse College and Boston University to his 11
courageous civil rights work, including the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955, to the 12
March on Washington in 1963, to the historic March from Selma to Montgomery in 13
1965, Dr. King served as a relentless testament to the human spirit's unceasing desire for 14
freedom and equality; and 15
WHEREAS, here in our own Commonwealth, the work of Dr. King and his 16
movement can be seen in myriad ways, particularly with the passage of the Kentucky 17
Civil Rights Act of 1966, which King called "the strongest and most comprehensive civil 18
rights bill passed by a Southern state"; and 19
WHEREAS, now more than ever, Dr. King's belief in change through nonviolenc e, 20
and his unwavering desire to see a world "sweltering with the heat of oppression 21
transformed into an oasis of peace and justice," is as prudent and necessary as it has ever 22
been; and 23
WHEREAS, now more than ever, Dr. King's dream is a necessary lesson to all 24
women and men across the country —including here in our own Commonwealth —who 25
seek to pursue a life unmarred by the scourge of prejudice; and 26
WHEREAS, it is rightful then that this b ody pause on this day to commend and 27

acknowledge the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; and 1
WHEREAS, in so doing, the members urge all Kentuckians to recommit 2
themselves to the lessons Dr. King preached about more than half a century ago; 3
NOW, THEREFORE, 4
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the 5
Commonwealth of Kentucky: 6
Section 1. The members of the House of Representatives hereby honor the life 7
and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and urge all Kentuckians to shape their lives by 8
those holy tenets of kindness, peace, and equality. 9
Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in 10
honor and loving memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 11
Section 3. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit a 12
copy of this Resolution to Representative Lindsey Burke. 13
