A JOINT RESOLUTION designating the Private Hargis Salyer, Jr. Memorial 1
Highway in Magoffin County. 2
WHEREAS, Hargis Salyer, Jr. was born on March 17, 1920, in Magof fin County, 3
Kentucky, to Hargis Salyer and Muriel Owens Salyer; and 4
WHEREAS, Hargis Salyer, Jr. would marry his sweetheart, Walletta Howard, on 5
May 18, 1940, and the couple would soon have their only child, their daughter Sandra 6
Leigh Salyer Johnson on February 15, 1941; and 7
WHEREAS, Hargis Salyer, Jr. would soon be called into the line of duty during 8
World War II, serving in the 329th Infantry of the United States Army, and would receive 9
the Silver Star during his service; and 10
WHEREAS, Hargis Salyer, Jr. was tragically killed in the line of duty while serving 11
in Germany on March 2, 1945; and 12
WHEREAS, for his service and sacrifice in protecting his country during one of its 13
most trying times, the community of Magoffin County and the family of Private Hargis 14
Salyer, Jr. believe he is worthy of honor and tangible public recognition in Magoffin 15
County; 16
NOW, THEREFORE, 17
Be it resolved by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: 18
Section 1. The Transportation Cabinet shall designate a portion of Kentucky 19
Route 1635 in Magoffin County, from mile point 3.65 to mile point 4.22, as the "Private 20
Hargis Salyer, Jr. Memorial Highway" and shall, within 30 days of the effective date of 21
this Resolution, erect appropriate signage denoting this designation. 22
