A JOINT RESOLUTION designating the Stumbo Family Memorial Highway in 1
Floyd County. 2
WHEREAS, the Stumbo Family has a long history of service and dedication to the 3
people of Floyd County and Eastern Kentucky; and 4
WHEREAS, the legacy of public service for the Stumbo Family began as far back 5
as the early twentieth century, when William M. "Buck" Stumbo, Jr., served as Floyd 6
County sheriff from 1905 to 1910; and 7
WHEREAS, several members of the Stumbo Family went on to hold the position of 8
Floyd County Sheriff, including Taylor Stumbo, from 1934 until 1938; Dr. W.L. "Walk" 9
Stumbo, who was elected in 1942 and the held the position until his death that same year; 10
and his wife, Annie Elliot Stumbo, who took over the office in 1942, becoming the first -11
ever female sheriff in the Commonwealth; and 12
WHEREAS, the Stumbo Family has served in various positions in the Floyd 13
County court system, including Dr. W.L. "Walk" Stumbo as the F loyd County Judge, 14
Henry Stumbo as a magistrate and Floyd County Judge for over 30 years, John M. 15
Stumbo as the Floyd County Judge/Executive, Larry Foster Stumbo as a magistrate, and 16
Harold Stumbo as the Commonwealth's Attorney, Floyd County Attorney, and District 17
and Circuit Court Judge for over 30 years; and 18
WHEREAS, the Stumbo Family has a history of dedicated politicians faithfully 19
serving the people of Floyd County, including John Milton Stumbo, who served in the 20
House of Representatives in the Kentucky General Assembly starting in 1948; and 21
WHEREAS, various members of the Stumbo Family have dedicated their lives and 22
careers to the citizens of Floyd County and Eastern Kentucky, and their steadfast 23
commitment should be memorialized in some tangible way; 24
NOW, THEREFORE, 25
Be it resolved by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: 26
Section 1. The Transportation Cabinet shall designate a portion of the new 27

Kentucky Route 680 in Floyd County, beginning with its intersection with Kentucky 1
Route 122, mile point 5.026, to its intersection with United States Route 23, mile point 2
14.388, as the "S tumbo Family Memorial Highway" and shall, within 30 days of the 3
effective date of this Resolution, erect appropriate signage denoting this designation. 4
