A RESOLUTION recognizing November 2026 as Grieving Children and Families 1
Month in Kentucky. 2
WHEREAS, Kentucky ranks 6th in the nation in childhood bereavement, 3
highlighting the significant impact that grief has on children and families across the 4
Commonwealth; and 5
WHEREAS, research shows that children who lost a father are 18 percent less 6
likely to attend college, demonstrating the lasting effects of childhood bereavements; and 7
WHEREAS, in Kentucky, one in ten children will lose a parent or sibling before the 8
age of 18, underscoring the widespread and profound impact of grief in the lives of young 9
Kentuckians; and 10
WHEREAS, adults aged 35 to 44 who experienced the lo ss of a parent before the 11
age of 19 are more than 35 percent more likely to suffer from poor health outcomes, 12
indicating the lifelong toll that childhood grief can take on mental and physical health; 13
and 14
WHEREAS, the Kentucky Center for Grieving Children and Families provides vital 15
support to children, youth, and families as they grieve and grow by helping them navigate 16
the challenges of bereavement and offering programs that foster healing and resilience; 17
and 18
WHEREAS, recognizing the month of November as G rieving Children and 19
Families Month in Kentucky will bring attention to the needs of grieving children and 20
families and highlight the importance of providing resources and support for those coping 21
with loss; and 22
WHEREAS, Children's Grief Awareness Day is o bserved nationally every year on 23
the third Thursday in November; 24

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 26

Section 1. The Senate does hereby recognize November 2026 as Grieving 1
Children and Families Month in Kentucky and commends all of the individuals, 2
organizations, and programs that work tirelessly to support grieving children, youth, and 3
families across the Commonwealth. 4
Section 2. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 5
Resolution to Senator Stephen Meredith for delivery to the Kentucky Center for Grieving 6
Children and Families. 7
