A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor and loving memory of Henry 1
Nicholas "Nick" Baker. 2
WHEREAS, Nick Baker was born in Hazard, Kentucky, and grew up on his 3
family's farm in Viper, Kentucky; and 4
WHEREAS, Nick Baker made Louisville his home for 66 years and practiced law 5
for 50 years; and 6
WHEREAS, Nick Baker graduated from Georgetown College in 1959, where he 7
was a member of the Kappa Alpha order, and graduated from the University of Louisville 8
Brandeis School of Law in 1966; and 9
WHEREAS, Nick Baker joined the U.S. Army at Fort Knox in 1959, served six 10
months of active duty in the 100th Training Division, and was a reservist until 1965; and 11
WHEREAS, Nick Baker w as a firm believer in civic duty, and he served the 12
Commonwealth as a senator of the 38th District in the Kentucky State Senate from 1970 13
to 1978; and 14
WHEREAS, while serving in the Senate, Nick Baker introduced Senate Bill 73, 15
which required any school wit h a men's basketball team that receives state funds to also 16
establish a women's team; and 17
WHEREAS, Senate Bill 73 brought girls' basketball back to Kentucky high schools 18
after a 42 -year lapse, changing the lives of countless aspiring female athletes, openi ng 19
doors to Kentucky girls who might not have been able to afford postsecondary education 20
and enabling women to contribute in immeasurable ways to Kentucky's society and 21
community; and 22
WHEREAS, Nick Baker was a man of deep religious faith, being a longtime 23
member of Louisville's historic Calvary Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry 24
twice; and 25
WHEREAS, Nick Baker's greatest joys in life came from his family, and he is 26
survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Susan Henson Baker; three children, Henry 27

(Samuela Elarti), Sarah, and Matthew; two grandchildren, Sophia Elarti -Baker and 1
Valentina Elarti -Baker; brother, Kenneth; sister -in-law, Louisa Henson; brother -in-law, 2
Ed (Gail) Henson; and much-loved nieces and nephews; and 3
WHEREAS, Nick Baker was preceded in death by his mother, Roberta Brashear 4
Baker and his father, Mark Baker, both of Hazard, Kentucky; 5
NOW, THEREFORE, 6
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Co mmonwealth of 7
Kentucky: 8
Section 1. The Senate hereby joins with Senator Brandon Smith in expressing 9
its most profound sympathy upon the passing of Henry Nicholas "Nick" Baker, and 10
extends its heartfelt condolences to his family in this time of loss. 11
Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor and loving 12
memory of Henry Nicholas "Nick" Baker. 13
Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 14
Resolution to Senator Brandon Smith for delivery to the family of Nicholas Baker. 15
