A RESOLUTION recognizing May 2026 as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis 1
Awareness Month in Kentucky. 2
WHEREAS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), known by many as Lou Gehrig's 3
disease, is a progressive fatal neurodegenerative disease in which a person's brain loses 4
connection with the muscles, slowly taking away the ability to walk, talk, eat, and 5
breathe; and 6
WHEREAS, every 90 minutes someone is diagnosed with ALS and someone passes 7
away from ALS; and 8
WHEREAS, on average, patients diagnosed with ALS only survive two to five 9
years from the time of diagnosis; and 10
WHEREAS, the exact causes of ALS are unknown and there is no known cure for 11
ALS; and 12
WHEREAS, people who have served in the military are more likely to develop 13
ALS than those with no history of military service; and 14
WHEREAS, securing access to new therapies, durable equipment, and 15
communication technologies are of vital importance to people living with ALS; and 16
WHEREAS, clinical trials play a pivotal role in evaluating new treatments, 17
enhancing quality of life, and fostering assistive technologies for those living with ALS; 18
and 19
WHEREAS, the ALS Association, as the largest philanthropic funder of ALS 20
research globally, has committed over $154 million to support more than 550 projects 21
across the United States and 18 other countries; and 22
WHEREAS, the ALS Association's commitment to accelerating the pace of 23
discovery remains unwavering, fueled by the hope that one day, ALS will be a livable 24
disease for everyone, everywhere; and 25
WHEREAS, ALS Awareness Month increases the public's awareness of people 26
with ALS' dire circumstances and acknowledges the research being done to eradicate this 27

NOW, THEREFORE, 2
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 3
Kentucky: 4
Section 1. The members of the Senate hereby recognize May 2026 as 5
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Awareness Month. 6
Section 2. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 7
Resolution to Senator Steve Rawlings. 8
