other state, making the health of the river and its tributaries essential to Kentucky 9
communities, infrastructure, and economic activity; and 10
WHEREAS, the Ohio River and its tributaries provide drinking water for millions 11
of Kentuckians and support the vast majority of the Commonwealth’s public water 12
systems; and 13
WHEREAS, the Ohio River basin underpins a substan tial portion of Kentucky’s 14
economy, supporting manufacturing, agriculture, energy production, and commercial 15
navigation that moves hundreds of millions of tons of cargo each year and sustains 16
thousands of jobs in the Commonwealth; and 17
WHEREAS, Kentucky’s o utdoor recreation and tourism economy, including 18
fishing, hunting, boating, paddling, and wildlife viewing, generates approximately $11.2 19
billion annually in economic activity and supports thousands of jobs in river and rural 20

similar initiatives in the Great Lakes and Chesapeake Bay have delivered substantial 6

WHEREAS, Kentucky stands to benefit from coordinated restoration investments 16
through improved drinking water quality, lowe r water treatment costs, revitalized 17
