WHEREAS, William "Turkey" Thomason was born on October 22, 1941, in Du ff, 3
Kentucky, to the late Albert H. and Emily Louise Burnett Thomason; and 4
WHEREAS, William "Turkey" Thomason proudly served his country as a veteran 5
of the United States Marine Corps, exemplifying honor and dedication; and 6
WHEREAS, William "Turkey" Thom ason dedicated his life to public service, 7
serving 36 years as a member of the Leitchfield City Council, during which time he 8
missed only one meeting, a testament to his unwavering commitment; and 9
WHEREAS, William "Turkey" Thomason was appointed Mayor of Leitchfield on 10
April 3, 1995, and stayed in office until December 31, 2018. During the 1995 campaign 11
he declared, "Hard work, dedication and community service have always been an integral 12
part of my life. I will always do what is best for the citizens of L eitchfield," a promise he 13
honored throughout his tenure; and 14
WHEREAS, William "Turkey" Thomason is remembered for his profound service 15
and lasting impact, and those who worked alongside him affirm that his influence will be 16
felt for generations to come an d express deep gratitude for his role in helping the 17
community grow and thrive; and 18
WHEREAS, William "Turkey" Thomason served for 60 years as an agency 19
manager for the Grayson County office of Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance, 20
demonstrating remarkable professional dedication; and 21
WHEREAS, William "Turkey" Thomason was a founding member of the 22
Leitchfield Lions Club and American Legion Post 81. He played an essential role in 23
establishing the Veterans Memorial Park in 2016, leaving a lasting tribute to those who 24
served. He was the first person appointed to the board of Citizens Bank, now known as 25
Wilson & Muir Bank & Trust, a lifelong member of Leitchfield United Methodist Church 26
and the oldest living member of the Grayson County Fair Board; and 27

WHEREAS, William "Turkey" Thomason enjoyed restoring vintage Chevrolets, 1
supporting local basketball teams, and together with his wife, hosted foreign exchange 2
students for 17 years, enriching the lives of many through cultural exchange; and 3
WHEREAS, William "Turkey" Thomason was known for his compassion and love 4
for animals, often taking strays to the Leitchfield Animal Shelter and cherishing his pets, 5
including his two dogs, Marley and Caesar, and his three cats, Tommy, Reagan, and 6
Peaches; and 7
WHEREAS, William "Turkey" Thomason is survived by his wife of 60 years, 8
Carolyn Johnson Thomason; his daughter, Shauna Lynne Thomason; his son, Patrick 9
Shane (Ashlee) Thomason; his sister, Georgia Mae Williams; his sister -in-law, Sandra 10
Psoras; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, as well as grandnieces and 11
grandnephews, all whom carry forward his legacy; and 12
WHEREAS, William "Turkey" Thomason, departed from this earthly life on 13
Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by hi s sister, 14
Sarah Jane Thomason; his brother-in-law, Joe Williams; and his aunt, Alma Shartzer; and 15
WHEREAS, William "Turkey" Thomason's life was defined by unwavering 16
dedication to his family, his community, and the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and his 17
legacy of service, leadership, compassion, and integrity will continue to inspire all who 18
knew him and those who benefit from his lifelong contributions; 19
NOW, THEREFORE, 20
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 21
Kentucky: 22
Section 1. The Senate expresses its most profound sympathy upon the passing 23
of William "Turkey" Thomason and extends heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, 24
and community. 25
Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor and loving 26
memory of William "Turkey" Thomason. 27
