A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor and loving memory of Leonard 1
"Len" Marion Spalding, Jr. 2
WHEREAS, Leonard "Len" Marion Spalding, Jr., was born in 1935 in Springfield, 3
Kentucky, to Dr. Len and Elsie Spalding; and 4
WHEREAS, Len Spalding, had undeniable charisma. He was a keen observer and 5
quick with a joke, which he always delivered with a smile and twinkle in his eyes; and 6
WHEREAS, Len Spalding, was a true s outhern gentleman, who gave hugs and 7
advice freely; and 8
WHEREAS, Len Spalding, was a proud member of the Bellarmine College Class of 9
1959. He embodied the Bellarmine spirit throughout his life. He served many years on 10
Bellarmine's Board of Trustees and was awarded Trustee Emeritus status in recognition 11
of his lifetime of service. In 2009, he was recognized as the university's Knight of 12
Knights, an honor bestowed upon those who demonstrate exceptional support for 13
Bellarmine. He, along with his wife, Susan, a re recognized as Bellarmine Visionaries for 14
their transformative giving. In 2017, Len and Susan Spalding received honorary doctoral 15
degrees in recognition of their leadership and longtime support of the university; and 16
WHEREAS, Len Spalding, received an MB A degree in finance from Indiana 17
University; and 18
WHEREAS, Len Spalding, grew up in Springfield, Kentucky, and desired the wider 19
world. He pursued a financial and investment career which took him to Chicago and New 20
York City. His last position was with J. P . Morgan Chase, where he served as past 21
president and chief executive officer. His time with J. P. Morgan Chase provided him the 22
opportunity to travel the world and fulfill his desire to build and strengthen cultural and 23
economic partnerships; and 24
WHEREAS, Len Spalding, did not let anything keep him from spending time with 25
his family. He famously once stowed away on a jet from Amsterdam to get home for 26
Thanksgiving; and 27

WHEREAS, Len Spalding, returned to Springfield in 1997 to pursue a second 1
career of philanthropic ventures. He loved his hometown and was eager to help in any 2
way he could; and 3
WHEREAS, Len Spalding, was a visionary leader who served with passion and 4
purpose in everything he did. One of his main passions was the belief in education for all, 5
at all levels. He helped numerous schools, colleges, and individuals with guidance and 6
financial support; and 7
WHEREAS, Len Spalding, served many years as a board member for Springfield-8
Washington County Economic Development Authority, including a two -year term as 9
board chairman; and 10
WHEREAS, Len Spalding, was a founding member of the Glenview Trust 11
Company in Louisville, Kentucky; and 12
WHEREAS, Len Spalding, owned several Snappy Tomato Pizza franchises in 13
Kentucky; and 14
WHEREAS, Len Spalding, served on the Board of Governors of the Investment 15
Company Institute and as a member of the Investment Advisory Committee of the 16
American Bankers Association. Additionally, he served as a member of the Board of 17
Trustees for the Catholic Education Foundation of the Archdiocese of Louisville, St. 18
Catharine College, the Marion-Washington County Airport Board, the Chicago Leukemia 19
Society, and Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago; and 20
WHEREAS, Len Spalding, passed peacefully in his home on October 28, 2025. He 21
will be remembered always by his wife, Susan; four children, Len (Janet) Spalding, Laura 22
(John) Carani, Thomas (Jennifer) Spalding, and Sally (Baird) Campbell; 17 23
grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. 24
NOW, THEREFORE, 25
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 26
Kentucky: 27

Section 1. The members of the Senate hereby express their most profound 1
sympathy upon the passing of Leonard "Len" Marion Spalding, Jr. 2
Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor and loving 3
memory of Leonard "Len" Marion Spalding, Jr. 4
Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 5
Resolution to Senator Jimmy Higdon for delivery. 6
