A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor and loving memory of Levi 1
Peterson, Jr. 2
WHEREAS, Levi Peterson, Jr., was born on December 13, 1933, in Birmingham, 3
Alabama, to the late Levi Peterson, Sr., and Lelia Bell McCurdy Peterson; and 4
WHEREAS, Levi Peterson, Jr., professed his faith in God at a young age and was 5
later baptized into the Catholic faith; and 6
WHEREAS, Levi Peterson, Jr., was mentored by a priest he hi ghly respected, 7
Father Michael Caswell, who provided wisdom and guidance during a very turbulent 8
period in his life; and 9
WHEREAS, Levi Peterson, Jr., served as an educator in various positions and 10
schools for 34 years until he finally retired in 1994; and 11
WHEREAS, Levi Peterson, Jr., had a strong impact on his community, being 12
described as "a trailblazer, public servant leader in education, opening doors for future 13
generations of students and educators"; and 14
WHEREAS, Levi Peterson, Jr., passed peacefully fr om this life on February 21, 15
2026; and 16
WHEREAS, Levi Peterson, Jr., was preceded in death by his devoted wife 17
Margaret; eldest son Levi III; and sisters Sheila Mahand and Sister Mary of the Trinity, 18
OP; and 19
WHEREAS, Levi Peterson, Jr., is survived by his son, Herschel Peterson; 20
granddaughters, Margaret Peterson and Savannah (Mantayvius) Peterson-Richards; great-21
grandson, Jamari Richards; sister, Geraldine Weathers; nieces, Carmen (Kevin) 22
Weathers-Washington, Charmein Weathers, Camille Woods, and Dr. Charita Weathers; 23
nephew, Thalmus (Joi) Mahand; surrogate sons, Eric (Joan) Coleman, Mark Leavell, 24
Lynn Radford, Garland Collins, and Johnny Burse; surrogate niece, Francene Gilmer; and 25
a host of other cherished family and dear friends; 26

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 1
Kentucky: 2
Section 1. The members of the Senate hereby express their most profound 3
sympathy upon the passing of Levi Peterson, Jr. 4
Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor and loving 5
memory of Levi Peterson, Jr. 6
Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 7
Resolution to Senator Reginald Thomas for delivery to the family. 8
