COURTS/JUSTICE OF PEACE: Increases the jurisdictional threshold for justice of peace
courts
1 AN ACT
2 To amend and reenact Code of Civil Procedure Article 4911(A), relative to the jurisdictional
3 amount in the justice of the peace courts; to provide for a ten thousand dollar
4 jurisdictional amount for the justice of the peace courts; and to provide for related
5 matters.
6 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
7 Section 1. Code of Civil Procedure Article 4911(A) is hereby amended and
8 reenacted to read as follows:
9 Art. 4911. Jurisdiction in justice of the peace courts; concurrent with district court;
10 amount in dispute
11 A. The civil jurisdiction of a justice of the peace court is concurrent with the
12 district court in cases where the amount in dispute does not exceed five ten thousand
13 dollars.

Abstract: Increases the civil jurisdictional amount for justice of the peace courts.
Present law provides that the justice of the peace courts have concurrent jurisdiction with
the district courts in cases where the amount in dispute does not exceed $5,000.
Proposed law changes present law to increase the amount from $5,000 to $10,000.
