HOUSE BILL NO. 1059
BY REPRESENTATIVES BROUSSARD AND CHASSION
1 AN ACT
2 To amend and reenact R.S. 17:5025(2)(a), 5025.5(2)(a), 5025.6(2)(a), 5025.7(2)(a), and
3 5026(A)(2)(a) and (c), (D)(2), (E)(2), and (F)(2)(a) and (c), relative to the Taylor
4 Opportunity Program for Students; to revise high school core curricula requirements
5 in the subject of mathematics with respect to initial eligibility for a program award;
6 and to provide for related matters.
7 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
8 Section 1. R.S. 17:5025(2)(a), 5025.5(2)(a), 5025.6(2)(a), 5025.7(2)(a), and
9 5026(A)(2)(a) and (c), (D)(2), (E)(2), and (F)(2)(a) and (c) are hereby amended and
10 reenacted to read as follows:
11 §5025. High school core curriculum requirements; Opportunity, Performance,
12 Honors, Excellence Awards
13 To be eligible for an Opportunity, Performance, Honors, or Excellence
14 Award pursuant to this Chapter, a student shall have successfully completed a core
15 curriculum which consists of twenty units of high school course work as follows:

17 (2) Mathematics - Four Units
18 (a) Algebra I or Integrated Mathematics I (one unit), Geometry or Integrated
19 Mathematics II (one unit), and Algebra II or Integrated Mathematics III (one unit).
20 Integrated Mathematics I, Integrated Mathematics II, and Integrated Mathematics III
21 may be substituted for the Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II sequence.

2 Honors Awards; students graduating 2021-2022 through 2025-2026 school

4 To be eligible for an Opportunity, Performance, or Honors Award pursuant
5 to this Chapter, a student who graduates during the 2021-2022 through the 2025-
6 2026 school year shall have successfully completed a core curriculum which consists
7 of nineteen units of high school course work as follows:

9 (2) Mathematics - Four Units
10 (a)(i) Algebra I (one unit), Geometry (one unit), and Algebra II (one unit).
11 Integrated Mathematics I, Integrated Mathematics II, and Integrated Mathematics III
12 may be substituted for the Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II sequence. The
13 provisions of this Item apply to students graduating during the 2021-2022 school
14 year through the 2024-2025 school year.
15 (ii) Algebra I or Integrated Mathematics I (one unit), Geometry or Integrated
16 Mathematics II (one unit), and Algebra II or Integrated Mathematics III (one unit).
17 The provisions of this Item apply to students graduating during the 2025-2026 school
18 year.

19 A. To be eligible for a TOPS-Tech Award pursuant to this Chapter, the
20 student shall have successfully completed the core curriculum requirements of R.S.
21 17:5025 or the core curriculum defined as follows:

23 (2) Math - Four Units
24 (a) Algebra I, Algebra I Part One and Algebra I Part Two, Integrated
25 Mathematics I, or an applied or hybrid algebra course (one unit), and Geometry,
26 Integrated Mathematics II, or an applied Geometry course (one unit).

28 (c) One or more units from the following: Algebra II, or Integrated
29 Mathematics III, Math Essentials, Business Math, Algebra III, Advanced Math -
30 Functions and Statistics, Advanced Math - Pre-Calculus, Pre-Calculus, Computer

1 Science, or comparable Louisiana Technical College courses offered by Jump Start
2 regional teams as approved by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary
3 Education. Integrated Mathematics I, II, and III may be substituted for Algebra I,
4 Geometry, and Algebra II and shall equal three mathematics credits.

6 D. For a student graduating during or after the 2017-2018 school year but
7 prior to the 2026-2027 school year, to be eligible for a TOPS-Tech Award pursuant
8 to this Chapter, the student shall have successfully completed the core curriculum

19 (b)(i) Three or more units from the following: Geometry, Algebra II, Math
20 Essentials, Financial Literacy, Business Math, Algebra III, Advanced Math -
21 Functions and Statistics, Advanced Math - Pre-Calculus, Pre-calculus, or comparable
22 Louisiana Technical College courses offered by Jump Start regional teams as
23 approved by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Integrated
24 Mathematics I, II, and III may be substituted for Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra
25 II, and shall equal three mathematics credits. The provisions of this Item apply to
26 students graduating during the 2017-2018 school year through the 2024-2025 school
27 year.
28 (ii) Three or more units from the following: Geometry, Algebra II or
29 Integrated Math III, Math Essentials, Financial Literacy, Business Math, Algebra III,
30 Advanced Math - Functions and Statistics, Advanced Math - Pre-Calculus,

1 Pre-calculus, or comparable Louisiana Technical College courses offered by Jump
2 Start regional teams as approved by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary

6 E. For a student graduating during the 2026-2027 school year to be eligible
