CURRICULA: Provides for a hunting course for certain public school students
1 AN ACT
2 To enact R.S. 17:263 and 3996(B)(24), relative to required courses of study in public
3 schools; to require a hunting course to be offered to certain public school students;
4 to provide for implementation; and to provide for related matters.
5 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1. R.S. 17:263 and 3996(B)(24) are hereby enacted to read as follows:
7 §263. Hunting course
8 A. Each public school governing authority with jurisdiction over schools
9 with grades five through twelve shall offer age- and grade-appropriate hunting
10 courses for the students in such grades. Such courses shall include but need not be
11 limited to firearms training, hunter education, and conservation education.
12 B. The State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, in consultation
13 with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, shall adopt rules in
14 accordance with the Administrative Procedure Act for the implementation of this
15 Section.

19 B. Notwithstanding any state law, rule, or regulation to the contrary and
20 except as may be otherwise specifically provided for in an approved charter, a

1 charter school established and operated in accordance with the provisions of this
2 Chapter and its approved charter and the school's officers and employees shall be
3 exempt from all statutory mandates or other statutory requirements that are
4 applicable to public schools and to public school officers and employees except for
5 the following laws otherwise applicable to public schools with the same grades:

9 Section 2. The provisions of Section 1 of this Act shall be initially implemented in
10 the 2027-2028 school year.
